Getting from Cluj-Napoca Airport to the City Center

Cluj-Napoca International Airport (CLJ) is about 9 km east of the city center. The ride takes 15-25 minutes by car, or about 30-40 minutes by bus. You have three main options: a public bus (cheapest, about 4 RON / 0.80 EUR), a taxi (roughly 30-50 RON / 6-10 EUR on the meter), or a pre-booked private transfer (15-25 EUR). Cluj is a well-organized Romanian city with reliable transport, so all options work reasonably well.

CLJ has a modern terminal that was expanded in recent years. It handles both Schengen and non-Schengen flights. For EU/Schengen arrivals, you skip passport control and head straight to baggage claim. Non-Schengen arrivals go through immigration, which is usually quick.

The baggage hall is compact and bags typically appear within 15-20 minutes. After collecting your luggage, you exit into a clean arrivals hall with a few shops, an exchange booth, and ATMs.

ATMs at the airport dispense Romanian lei (RON). Use these rather than the exchange booth, which offers worse rates. Most taxis and all transfer services accept card payments, but having some cash is useful for the bus or smaller purchases.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal and works well enough to contact your driver or check directions.

Airport taxis — Official taxis use a touchscreen terminal in the arrivals hall. You enter your destination, the system assigns you a taxi, and gives you a receipt with the car number and estimated fare. Fares are metered, regulated, and honest. Expect 30-50 RON (6-10 EUR) to the city center. This system eliminates the aggressive driver problem found at many airports.

Pre-booked private transfers — A driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign. Prices run 15-25 EUR to central Cluj-Napoca. This is more expensive than a taxi but guarantees a specific vehicle, no waiting, and the driver tracks your flight.

Ride-hailing apps — Bolt and Uber both operate in Cluj-Napoca. You can order a car from the airport. Prices are similar to or slightly below taxi rates. However, pickup can take 5-10 minutes as drivers need to reach the airport, and during peak hours, surge pricing may apply.

Car rental — Major agencies (Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Autonom) have desks in the arrivals hall. Driving in Cluj and around Transylvania is straightforward. Roads are generally good, though some mountain routes are narrow.

The airport area is safe and well-lit. Waiting for a taxi at midnight is not a concern. If you know your arrival will be very late, a pre-booked transfer removes any uncertainty.

Taxis assigned through the airport system are standard sedans. If you have a large family or lots of luggage, you might need two cars or a larger vehicle arranged through a transfer service. Child seats are not provided in taxis. Pre-booked transfers can include them on request.

The public bus has space for luggage but can be crowded during peak hours. With a stroller and bags, a taxi or transfer is more practical.

The airport terminal is modern and accessible. Elevators and ramps are available throughout.

For taxis: use the touchscreen kiosk in the arrivals hall. It assigns you a specific car with a number plate. Walk outside to the taxi line and find your assigned vehicle.

For pre-booked transfers: your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign, or just outside the exit doors. The arrivals area is small and you will spot them easily.

For Bolt/Uber: exit the terminal and follow the app to the pickup point. Drivers usually pull up to the departures level or the parking area nearby.
