BOD - Bordeaux

Taxi vs private transfer from Bordeaux Airport: an honest comparison

Both get you from Bordeaux-Merignac to the city in 20-30 minutes. The real difference is in predictability and what happens when things do not go as planned.

Taxis at Bordeaux Airport

Taxis queue at the rank outside arrivals. Bordeaux uses a regulated flat-rate system for airport rides, which removes the worst uncertainty. A trip to the city centre costs EUR 30-45, to Gare Saint-Jean around EUR 40-50. You confirm the rate, get in, and go.

Drivers are generally professional. Most speak enough English for basic communication, though Bordeaux is not as multilingual as Paris. Cards are accepted for fares above EUR 25 by law, but some drivers are reluctant. Having cash as backup avoids awkwardness.

The main downside: taxi availability can be thin during off-peak hours. If several flights land at once, the queue of passengers can be longer than the queue of taxis. You might wait 10-20 minutes. Late at night, the rank thins out further.

Pre-booked transfers

A pre-booked transfer means a driver is assigned to your flight. They monitor your arrival, wait in the hall with a name sign, and take you directly to your destination. Sedan transfers to central Bordeaux cost EUR 40-65.

The price is fixed at booking. If your flight is delayed two hours, the driver still waits. If traffic is terrible, the fare does not change. You can request child seats, minivans, or specific vehicle types in advance.

Transfers shine for destinations outside the city. If you are heading to Saint-Emilion, Arcachon, or the Medoc wine region, a transfer gives you a confirmed route and price. A taxi to these destinations is possible but requires negotiation, and the flat-rate system may not cover longer distances.

Price comparison

| Destination | Taxi | Transfer | |-------------|------|----------| | City centre | EUR 30-45 | EUR 40-55 | | Gare Saint-Jean | EUR 40-50 | EUR 45-60 | | Saint-Emilion | EUR 70-100 (negotiated) | EUR 70-110 (fixed) | | Arcachon | EUR 80-110 (negotiated) | EUR 80-120 (fixed) |

When to pick which

Take a taxi if you are heading to central Bordeaux, arriving during normal hours, and travelling light. The flat-rate system protects you, and the ride is short enough that there is little to go wrong.

Book a transfer if you are heading outside the city, need a child seat, have heavy luggage, are arriving late at night, or simply want someone standing there with your name when you walk out. The premium over a taxi is small, and the peace of mind is worth it for many travellers.

One thing both share: neither will help you avoid Bordeaux traffic during rush hours (8-9 AM, 5-7 PM). The rocade (ring road) gets congested, and the route from the airport crosses it. Allow extra time during these windows regardless of your transport choice.
