Arriving late at Bordeaux Airport: what to expect at night

Bordeaux-Merignac handles flights until around midnight, with occasional delays pushing arrivals later. If you are landing after 9 PM, your transport options start narrowing. Here is the reality.

What stops running

The Liane 1+ shuttle bus runs its last departure around 12:30 AM, but frequency drops after 9 PM. You might wait 20-30 minutes for a bus. After the last bus, public transport is done for the night. The Bordeaux tram system also stops around 1 AM, so even if you got to the city by bus, onward connections may not exist.

What still works at night

Taxis are your main fallback. The rank outside arrivals usually has cars for the last scheduled flights. However, if several flights land close together or there is a delay, the queue can outstrip supply. After midnight, taxi availability drops significantly. You may need to call Taxis Bordeaux Metropole or use the taxi-booking app.

Uber operates at night in Bordeaux, but with fewer drivers. Wait times of 10-20 minutes are common after 11 PM. Surge pricing may apply, though Bordeaux's nighttime demand is low enough that surges are usually mild. Expect EUR 25-40 to the city centre.

Pre-booked transfers are the most reliable option for late arrivals. The driver is committed to your flight regardless of when it actually lands. If you are delayed by two hours, they adjust. The price does not change. For late-night peace of mind, this is worth the EUR 40-65 to the city.

The airport after hours

Bordeaux-Merignac is not designed for overnighting. Once the last flights arrive, the terminal empties out. The cafe and shops close. Seating is limited and not comfortable for sleeping. Security will eventually move you along. If you have a very early morning departure, consider a nearby airport hotel (there are a few within a short drive) rather than trying to sleep in the terminal.

Pricing at night

The flat-rate taxi fare to the city (EUR 30-50) applies regardless of time. However, availability is the issue, not price. Uber may add a small premium. Pre-booked transfers are the same price day or night.

If your flight is badly delayed

If you know your flight will arrive very late (after midnight), your best options are: book a transfer in advance, pre-arrange a taxi by phone, or check Uber availability as you land. The worst case is arriving at 1 AM with no booking and an empty taxi rank. It happens, and it means waiting 15-30 minutes for a called taxi. Not dangerous, just inconvenient and tiring.

Bordeaux is a safe city, and the airport area is not problematic. But there is nothing within walking distance. You need a vehicle to get anywhere useful.
