How much it costs to get from Almaty Airport to the city

Last updated: April 2026

Almaty Airport is about 15 km from the city centre. Transport costs are low by international standards, but the gap between the cheapest and most expensive option is wide, mainly because of price gouging by airport taxi drivers.

Yandex Go: the app quotes you before you accept

This is the best-value door-to-door option. Yandex Go is the dominant rideshare app in Kazakhstan. Prices are set by the app based on distance and demand — which is exactly why this page does not print one. The app shows you the fare for your journey before you accept it, and that live quote is worth more than any range published here could be. Late night and rush hour push it up.

Payment can be by card (added in the app) or cash. You need the app installed and data on your phone.

Airport taxi (negotiated): no published rate exists

Drivers waiting outside arrivals will quote prices verbally. Kazakhstan does not regulate taxi fares and no authority publishes an airport rate, so there is no official figure to hold them to — the price is whatever you agree. Opening offers to a foreign-looking passenger run well above what the app would charge for the same trip. Without Russian, you will likely pay more than necessary. The defence is to open Yandex Go and compare its quote against theirs before you commit.

These drivers are not scammers in the dangerous sense. They are simply charging what the market will bear. But you are paying a significant premium over app-based alternatives.

Pre-booked transfer: fixed when you book

A sedan transfer to central Almaty is priced and fixed when you book, so you know the number before you land. Minivans or luxury vehicles cost more. The price includes airport pickup, flight tracking, and a set waiting period. At an airport with no regulated tariff and an active tout problem, a price agreed in advance is the point.

This is more expensive than Yandex Go but cheaper than most negotiated airport taxis. The value is in convenience and certainty.

Bus 79: a standard city fare

The cheapest option by far. Bus 79 runs from the airport to the city centre, stopping along Al-Farabi Avenue and other major roads. The journey takes over an hour. Payment is in cash. This is only practical if you have a small backpack and plenty of time.

There is no regulated tariff in Almaty and no authority publishing airport fares, so this table gives you the two mechanisms that produce a real number rather than a range somebody invented.

What makes prices vary

Time of day has the biggest impact. Rush hour traffic (8-10 AM, 5-8 PM on weekdays) can double the travel time and push metered or app-based fares higher.

Demand affects Yandex Go pricing. Multiple flights arriving simultaneously can create temporary price surges.

Vehicle type matters for transfers. A sedan is cheaper than a minivan or premium vehicle.

Negotiation skill is the main variable for airport taxis. Your ability to communicate in Russian directly affects the price you pay.

Currency tips

The Kazakhstani tenge (KZT) is the local currency. Check the rate on the day rather than trusting a figure printed on a travel page — this one used to quote one, and a hardcoded exchange rate is wrong the moment it is written. ATMs at the airport dispense tenge. Currency exchange counters are available in arrivals. Card payments work in most shops and restaurants in Almaty, and Yandex Go accepts cards.

Bottom line

Almaty airport transport is cheap compared to most international airports. Yandex Go gives you the best price. A pre-booked transfer gives you the least hassle. Airport taxi touts give you neither.
