Getting from Almaty Airport with children and family

Last updated: February 2026

Almaty Airport is small enough that navigating with children is not difficult. The challenges come with ground transport, particularly around child seats and vehicle size.

The terminal with kids

The international arrivals area is compact. Immigration queues are usually manageable, and the walk from passport control to baggage claim to the exit is short. Luggage trolleys are available. There are basic restroom facilities but do not expect dedicated family rooms or play areas.

There is a small shop and cafe in the arrivals area, but options are limited. If your children are hungry, bring snacks from the flight.

Child seats: the real issue

Kazakhstan requires child restraints for children under 12 in vehicles. However, enforcement is inconsistent and child seats are virtually nonexistent in standard taxis and Yandex Go cars. This puts families in an awkward position.

Pre-booked transfers are the only reliable way to get a proper child seat from the airport. Specify the number and ages of your children when booking, and the provider can install appropriate seats. Some transfer companies have forward-facing seats, booster seats, and infant carriers. Confirm availability when you book.

If you are planning extensive travel in Kazakhstan, consider bringing your own portable car seat or booster.

Luggage capacity

Families with strollers, car seats, and multiple suitcases will not fit in a standard sedan. Yandex Go offers options for larger vehicles, but availability is limited at the airport. A pre-booked minivan or larger vehicle ensures you have enough space.

The baggage claim area has trolleys, and the distance to the vehicle pickup area is short. Strollers are typically returned at the oversized baggage belt.

Getting to the city

Pre-booked transfer is the clear winner for families. Child seats arranged, vehicle size matched, driver waiting, fixed price. The ride to central Almaty takes 20-40 minutes.

Yandex Go works for families with older children who do not need special seats. Request a Comfort or larger vehicle class in the app for more space.

Bus is not practical with small children and luggage. The route is long, the bus gets crowded, and there is no luggage storage.

Airport taxis are risky with small children. No child seats, potential overcharging, and communication difficulties about your needs.

Climate considerations

Almaty has extreme temperature variations. Winter arrivals (November to March) can mean temperatures well below freezing. The walk from the terminal to the vehicle is short but dress children appropriately. Summer can be quite warm. Either way, having a vehicle waiting rather than searching for transport with children in tow makes a difference.

Practical tips

  • Download Yandex Go before your trip as a backup, even if you book a transfer.
  • Bring snacks and water for the children. Airport options are limited.
  • Have your hotel address written in Russian on your phone. It helps even with pre-booked drivers.
  • The ride to the city is generally smooth. Almaty's roads are decent, and the route from the airport is mostly highway.
