Taxi vs private transfer from Malaga Airport

Last updated: March 2026

For Malaga city, the train at EUR 1.80 makes both taxis and transfers largely redundant. For the Costa del Sol and inland destinations, the choice between a metered taxi and a pre-booked transfer is more relevant.

Taxis at Malaga Airport

Taxis queue outside the arrivals exits in T2/T3. They are metered, Andalucía-regulated, and generally reliable. Drivers at Malaga Airport are experienced with tourist routes. The airport supplement is fixed and clearly displayed.

Typical fares: Malaga city EUR 15-25, Torremolinos EUR 15-22, Fuengirola EUR 30-42, Marbella EUR 55-80, Nerja EUR 75-100.

For medium-distance journeys (Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola), taxis are straightforward and well-priced. For longer journeys, the meter can vary based on traffic and route choice, particularly regarding the AP-7 toll. Clarify before departure whether the toll route will be used.

The taxi queue at Malaga is normally manageable, even in summer. The airport is large enough to maintain an adequate taxi supply. Waits of more than 20 minutes during busy periods are unusual.

Pre-booked private transfers

A driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign. Fixed price agreed at booking, regardless of traffic or route. Flight tracking is included.

Transfer prices are broadly comparable to taxis, sometimes slightly higher for short routes but competitive on longer ones:

  • Malaga city: EUR 20-30 (vs taxi EUR 15-25)
  • Marbella: EUR 60-85 (vs taxi EUR 55-80)
  • Granada: EUR 130-165 (vs taxi EUR 120-160)
For long routes like Granada (130 km) or Nerja, the fixed-price advantage is meaningful — you are not watching a meter tick up in holiday traffic.

Comparison

| Factor | Taxi | Private transfer | |---|---|---| | Cost to Malaga city | EUR 15-25 | EUR 20-30 | | Cost to Marbella | EUR 55-80 | EUR 60-85 | | Cost to Granada | EUR 120-160 | EUR 130-165 | | Queue wait | 5-20 min | None | | Meeting point | Outside rank | Inside arrivals | | Toll transparency | Variable | Fixed/included | | Fixed pricing | No | Yes | | Child seat | No | On request | | Flight tracking | No | Yes |

When each option wins

Taxi: Short to medium-distance routes (Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Malaga city) where the queue is short and the metered fare is not substantially variable. Good for solo travellers and couples.

Private transfer: Long-distance journeys where a fixed price matters (Marbella, Nerja, Granada, Ronda). Families needing child seats. Groups of three or more where meeting a driver inside is more convenient than the rank. Anyone who wants to be met inside after a long flight.

Train: Honestly, for Malaga city the EUR 1.80 train beats both options for price and speed. It runs every 20 minutes from inside the terminal.

The Granada or Ronda argument

For the longer inland routes, a pre-booked transfer makes particular sense. A 130 km journey in summer traffic with a meter running is unpredictable. Agree on a price beforehand. For Ronda specifically, the mountain road (A-367) has sections that are slower than expected — a fixed fare eliminates the anxiety of watching the meter on a winding descent.
