The cheap option: the Metro, capped at 2.50 GBP
The Tyne and Wear Metro runs from a station inside the airport terminal to Newcastle city centre (Haymarket, Monument or Central Station) in about 25 minutes.
Under The Mayor's Fares, in force since 1 April 2026, the fare is capped rather than zonal:
- Adult single: capped at 2.50 GBP, however many zones you cross
- All-day travel: capped at 5.00 GBP
- Under-21s: 1 GBP per single journey

Taxi pricing
There is one thing to know here that most guides get wrong: Newcastle Airport does not run an open metered hackney rank. The airport's dedicated on-site taxi service is Arrow Cars, which holds the exclusive pick-up point immediately outside arrivals, with a booking office in the arrivals hall staffed 24/7 and self-service kiosks at the pick-up point. The airport states that all Arrow Cars fares are fixed with all charges included — the price you see is the price you pay (Newcastle International Airport).
So we do not publish a taxi price table or a per-kilometre rate for NCL. A metered estimate would be misleading, and the operator quotes you a real, fixed, all-in fare before you travel. Ask at the desk, the kiosk, or online, and you will have the actual number rather than our guess.

For Durham and Hexham the Metro-plus-train combination is good value, but the onward rail fare is set by the train operator and varies with when you book — check National Rail for the current price. For Alnwick and rural Northumberland, road transport is the practical option.
