Getting from Madrid Barajas Airport to your destination

Madrid Barajas (MAD) is just 13 km from the city center — well-connected and easy to navigate. The Metro costs just 4.50-6 € (including airport supplement) and takes about 30-40 minutes to central Madrid. The airport bus (Exprés Aeropuerto) costs 5 € and runs 24/7 to Atocha and Cibeles. A taxi has a fixed rate of 33 € to anywhere within the M-30 motorway ring (covers most of central Madrid) — that is Tariff 4, set by the city council and in force since 1 January 2026. MAD is a big airport with 4 terminals (T1, T2, T3, T4/T4S). Most international flights use T4 (the newest and nicest terminal). Budget airlines like Ryanair use T1. Check your terminal before landing — it matters for transport.

All terminals are connected by a free shuttle bus. The Metro serves T1-T2-T3 (one station) and T4 (another station). The airport express bus stops at T1, T2, and T4.

After baggage claim, follow signs to your preferred transport. MAD is well-signposted in Spanish and English. Free WiFi is available.

Metro (Line 8): Runs from the airport to Nuevos Ministerios station (city center) in about 15 minutes, with connections to the rest of the network. Total travel time to Sol/Gran Vía: about 30-40 minutes including transfers. Costs 4.50-6 € (regular metro ticket + airport supplement of 3 €). Runs 6:00 AM to 1:30 AM. Honest take: great for solo travelers with one bag. Not fun with heavy luggage — lots of stairs and transfers.

Airport Express Bus (Línea Exprés): Yellow bus running 24 hours between the airport and Atocha station via Cibeles/Plaza de Cibeles. Costs 5 € (exact change or card). Daytime (6:00 AM - 11:30 PM): every 15-20 minutes, takes 25-40 minutes. Night (midnight - 5:40 AM): runs to/from Cibeles instead of Atocha, roughly every 35 minutes (EMT Madrid). Best public transport option — less hassle with luggage than the metro.

Taxi: Madrid sets an official fixed airport fare — Tariff 4, 33 € — from any terminal to anywhere within the M-30 ring road. It applies 24 hours a day and no supplement may be added on top (Ayuntamiento de Madrid, in force since 1 January 2026). This covers virtually all of central Madrid (Sol, Gran Vía, Salamanca, Malasaña, La Latina, Retiro, Atocha, Chamberí). Clean, white taxis with a red diagonal stripe. No tipping expected. Trip takes 20-30 minutes without traffic, up to 45 in rush hour. The council reviews its tariffs most years, so check the current figure before you travel.

Uber/Cabify: Both work in Madrid. They price dynamically, so a fare can land below or above the taxi rate depending on demand — and unlike the taxi there is no guaranteed 33 € cap. Cabify is popular in Spain. Check both apps against the fixed taxi fare before you commit.

Pre-booked transfer: The price is fixed when you book and varies by provider and vehicle size; the driver meets you in arrivals. Worth it for groups, families needing child seats, or destinations outside the M-30.

Madrid never sleeps, and neither does its airport transport. The Airport Express Bus runs 24/7 — this is huge. At night (roughly midnight to 5:40 AM), it runs to Cibeles instead of Atocha, about every 35 minutes. The Metro closes at 1:30 AM. Taxis are available 24/7, and the fixed 33 € rate applies at any hour — Tariff 4 is a 24-hour fare with no night supplement. You won't be stranded at MAD regardless of when you land — this is one of Europe's best airports for late arrivals.

Skip the metro with heavy luggage and strollers — it involves stairs, escalators, and transfers. The Airport Express Bus has luggage space and is manageable. For families, the 33 € taxi is hard to beat — it is one fixed price for the whole car, door-to-door, however many of you there are (up to the vehicle's capacity). If you need a child seat, pre-book a transfer. Spanish taxis don't carry child seats (taxis are legally exempt, but it's not ideal for safety).

Metro: Follow signs to "Metro" from any terminal. T1/T2/T3 share the "Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3" station. T4 has its own station.

Airport Express Bus: Stops at the ground floor of T1, T2, and T4. Follow signs for "Bus."

Taxi: Official taxi ranks are at the ground floor exits of each terminal. Stick to the white cabs with red diagonal stripes — they have meters and charge the official 33 € fixed rate.

Pre-booked transfer: Drivers wait in the arrivals hall of your terminal with a name sign. Confirm your terminal in the booking.
