Late night arrivals at Madrid Barajas Airport — your real options

Last updated: March 2026

Good news: Madrid is one of the best European airports for late-night arrivals. The city that never sleeps has transport to match.

What's available after midnight

| Option | Available? | Cost | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | Airport Express Bus | Yes — runs 24/7 | 5 € | Night route goes to Cibeles instead of Atocha | | Taxi | Yes, 24/7 | 30 € flat | Same rate day and night | | Metro | No — closes 1:30 AM | N/A | First train around 6:00 AM | | Uber/Cabify | Yes | 25-40 € | May have surge pricing | | Pre-booked transfer | Yes | €30-45 | Reliable, fixed price |

The Airport Express Bus — 24-hour hero

Madrid's Línea Exprés Aeropuerto is one of the few airport buses in Europe that truly runs all night. Here's the nighttime version:

  • Hours: 11:30 PM to 6:00 AM
  • Route: Airport terminals to Cibeles (not Atocha — the night route is different)
  • Frequency: Every 20 minutes
  • Cost: 5 €
  • Time: 25-35 minutes (less traffic at night)
Cibeles (Plaza de Cibeles) is in central Madrid. From there, you can walk to many hotels in the Sol/Gran Vía area (15-20 minutes) or grab a taxi for the last stretch.

Taxis at night — no surcharge

The 30 € flat rate applies 24/7 — no night supplement. This is unusually generous compared to most European cities. Taxis are available at all terminals around the clock. At 2 AM, the taxi rank might be smaller but so is the queue. You'll rarely wait more than 5-10 minutes.

The drive is faster at night — typically 15-20 minutes to central Madrid with empty roads.

Late-night Madrid is still alive

Unlike cities where a midnight arrival means deserted streets, Madrid is famously nocturnal. Restaurants serve dinner until midnight, bars stay open until 3-4 AM, and public transport reflects this culture. You'll arrive to a city that's still very much awake.

What if you arrive between 1:30 AM and 6:00 AM (metro dead zone)

  • Airport Express Bus: Your best budget option — running every 20 minutes
  • Taxi: Always available, 30 € fixed, fast
  • Uber/Cabify: Work but may have surge pricing at 2-3 AM
  • Pre-booked transfer: Guaranteed, same price as daytime
You genuinely can't go wrong at MAD at night. This is not one of those airports where you'll be stranded.

Safety at night

Madrid Airport is safe around the clock — well-lit, staffed, and monitored. Central Madrid at night is busy with people (this is Spain — nightlife is a way of life). Standard city precautions apply: watch your belongings, stick to well-lit areas, use official transport.

Pro tip: use the night to your advantage

A 1 AM arrival in Madrid means:

  • No traffic — taxi to the hotel in 15 minutes
  • No queues at the taxi rank
  • 30 € flat rate regardless
  • You can grab dinner on the way (restaurants open late in Madrid)
Honestly, arriving late in Madrid is almost better than arriving during rush hour.
