The 55 km journey from KLIA to KL city center is manageable with kids, but the distance means you need to plan. Here's what works and what doesn't for families.
Child seat reality in Malaysia
Malaysia has child seat laws, but enforcement is inconsistent. Here's what that means for you:
- Airport taxis: Do not have child seats. Period.
- Grab: Grab has a "GrabFamily" option in some cities — check the app, but don't count on it at KLIA.
- Pre-booked transfer: You can request infant, toddler, or booster seats. This is your best option for young children.
- KLIA Ekspres train: No car seats needed. Kids ride safely on the train — KLIA Ekspres lists children under 6 free and ages 6-15 at RM25.
The train option for families
The KLIA Ekspres is actually excellent for families:
- 28 minutes — short enough for even impatient kids
- Spacious with room for strollers and luggage
- Air-conditioned — important when it's 35°C outside
- Children under 6 ride free, ages 6-15 pay RM25 against the RM55 adult fare (KLIA Ekspres's published table)

Surviving the journey with kids
If you take a car (taxi/transfer/Grab):
- The drive is 45-90 minutes depending on traffic. That's a long ride with restless kids.
- Bring snacks, water, and entertainment. The highway has nothing to look at.
- Air conditioning is essential — request it's working when you get in.
- If your child gets car sick, sit them in front-facing seats and crack the window.
If you take the train:
- The 28-minute ride is easy. The station walk at KLIA is about 10 minutes — manageable with a stroller.
- KL Sentral can be crowded and confusing. Follow signs for the taxi stand or Grab pick-up.
Luggage with kids
Families tend to travel heavy. A standard sedan fits 2 large suitcases + 1 small bag. If you have more (stroller, car seat, extra bags), request a van or MPV when booking your transfer. Don't try to squeeze a family of 4 with full luggage into a regular Grab car.
Airport facilities for families
KLIA has:
- Baby rooms/nursing rooms in both terminals — clean and private
- Children's play areas in the departure halls
- Stroller-friendly paths throughout — escalators have stroller modes, lifts are available everywhere
- Formula and baby food available at convenience stores in the terminal
Heat warning
Kuala Lumpur is hot and humid year-round (30-35°C). The walk from the terminal to any transport can be sweaty. Keep water handy and don't overdress kids. The air-conditioned terminal and transport vehicles are a relief.
