Late night arrivals at KLIA — your real options

Last updated: March 2026

KLIA handles many long-haul flights arriving in the late evening and early morning. Landing at midnight or 2 AM is completely normal here. The good news: transport options exist around the clock.

What's available after midnight

| Option | Available? | Cost | Notes | |---|---|---|---| | Airport taxi (coupon) | Yes, 24/7 | 75-130 MYR (€15-26) | Taxi counter operates all night | | Grab | Yes, but fewer drivers | 60-100 MYR (€12-20) | Longer wait times after midnight | | KLIA Ekspres train | Until ~1:00 AM | 55 MYR (€11) | Last train around 12:30-1:00 AM | | Airport bus | Limited | 12-15 MYR (€2.50-3) | Very few services after midnight | | Pre-booked transfer | Yes | €20-35 | Most reliable late-night option |

The late-night reality

Airport taxis are your most reliable walk-up option at 2 AM. The coupon counter in arrivals operates 24/7, and there are usually taxis available around the clock. The fixed coupon price doesn't increase at night — you pay the same as daytime.

Grab works but gets unreliable after midnight. Fewer drivers are on the road, wait times can be 15-30 minutes, and you might get cancellations. Surge pricing occasionally kicks in for very late arrivals.

KLIA Ekspres runs its last train around 12:30-1:00 AM. First train starts around 5:00 AM. If your flight lands between 1-5 AM, the train isn't an option.

Pre-booked transfers are the most stress-free late-night choice. The driver monitors your flight, waits regardless of delays, and charges the same as daytime. After a long international flight landing at 2 AM, having someone there with your name is worth the premium.

The midnight traffic advantage

Here's the silver lining of late arrivals: KL's notorious traffic disappears after 10 PM. The drive from KLIA to KL center takes a smooth 40-45 minutes instead of the 60-90 minute daytime crawl. If you can handle the tiredness, late arrival means faster transport.

Waiting at the airport overnight

If your flight arrives between 1-4 AM and you'd rather wait for the first train at 5 AM:

  • Both KLIA and KLIA2 have 24-hour food courts and cafes
  • There's a transit hotel (Sama-Sama Express) inside KLIA for a few hours of sleep
  • The terminals are air-conditioned and relatively comfortable
  • WiFi is free
But honestly, unless you're extremely budget-conscious, just take a taxi or transfer. Spending 3 hours in an airport at 2 AM isn't fun.

Safety at night

KLIA is a modern, well-secured international airport. The taxi rank and ride-hailing areas are well-lit and monitored. KL is generally safe at night, and the highway to the city is a major expressway. Use official transport (coupon taxis, Grab, or pre-booked transfers) and you'll have no issues.

Our recommendation

For flights landing between 10 PM and 1 AM: try to catch the last KLIA Ekspres — it's fast and drops you at KL Sentral where Grab is still available.

For flights landing after 1 AM: pre-booked transfer is the best option. Airport taxi coupon is the reliable backup. Grab is a gamble at that hour.
