Cochin International Airport is 25–30 km from central Kochi, making the transfer one of the more expensive parts of arriving in Kerala. Here is what is actually knowable about the cost — and what is not.
The one fare that is published: the Kochi Metro
The metro does not reach the airport, but its northern terminus, Aluva, is about 8 km away and reachable by KSRTC bus or a short taxi hop. From Aluva, KMRL publishes the full fare chart:
| From Aluva to | Fare |
|---|---|
| Edapally | ₹40 |
| Kaloor, Town Hall, MG Road, Maharaja's College, Ernakulam South | ₹50 |
| Vytila, Thripunithura Terminal | ₹60 |
Fixed-price private transfer

Nothing on the network costs more than ₹60 or less than ₹10. For a solo traveller heading to Ernakulam with a light bag, this is dramatically the cheapest way in.
The prepaid taxi counter
CIAL runs the official prepaid counter in arrivals. Rates are fixed, zone-based, regulated, and posted on the board at the counter, varying by vehicle class (standard sedan, premium sedan, SUV). You pay, get a receipt with the driver and vehicle details, and walk to the queue.
We are not printing per-destination figures for it. CIAL's own online fare lookup is broken — its system returns an internal error instead of a price for every destination — so there is no published rate card to verify against. The board at the counter is the authority. Read it before you pay.
What nobody publishes
Uber and Ola price in the app and move with demand, rising late at night and at peak hours. Private transfer companies quote a fixed price when you book. KSRTC sets its own bus fares, collected onboard. None of these publishes a tariff you can check in advance, so the honest instruction is: get the number from the source, on the day, and compare it against the counter board.
Costs to watch for
Toll charges: There are minor tolls on the NH544 toward Ernakulam. Prepaid taxi fares include tolls; Uber and Ola may add them separately. Ask.
Waiting charges: If you keep the driver waiting for stops en route, prepaid taxis may charge extra. Uber and Ola build waiting into the fare.
Late-night pricing: Prepaid taxis do not officially charge more at night — the posted zone rate is the posted zone rate. Uber and Ola do rise with demand in the small hours.
ATM fees: Foreign cards at Indian ATMs incur a per-withdrawal fee that varies by bank and changes periodically — the machine shows it before you confirm. Withdraw enough for transport and your first day so you pay it once.
What is actually the cheapest option?
The Kochi Metro from Aluva is the cheapest published route into Ernakulam, capped at ₹60. Among door-to-door options, Uber or Ola off-peak is often cheaper than the prepaid counter, but neither publishes rates so you have to look. For most international travellers arriving tired with luggage, the prepaid counter remains the best balance of price, reliability and simplicity.
Is a private transfer worth it from COK?
Given the 30 km distance and 60–90 minute drive, a private transfer is more justified here than at airports closer to the city: a named driver at arrivals, a guaranteed vehicle class, no queue, and a price fixed before you land. Whether the premium over the counter rate is worth it depends on what the counter is charging that day — check the board and compare. For Munnar or Alleppey, drives of 1.5 to 4 hours, booking ahead is strongly recommended regardless.
