How Much Does It Cost to Get from EuroAirport to Basel, Mulhouse, or Freiburg?

Last updated: April 2026

EuroAirport (BSL/MLH/EAP) serves three countries, and pricing depends on which direction you are heading. Swiss prices are in CHF, French and German destinations in EUR.

The cheapest option

Bus 50 to Basel SBB is hard to beat. It is priced on the TNW zone tariff — the airport is TNW zone 13 — and the ticket also covers the onward tram leg within its validity window. TNW publishes the current fare table at tnw.ch; buy from the machine at the stop. The bus is modern, clean, and departs every 7-10 minutes. If you have a Swiss Half-Fare card, you pay the reduced fare. GA (general abonnement) holders ride free.

A "Basel" day ticket covering TNW zones 10, 11, 13 (the airport), 14 and 15 costs 10.70 CHF for an adult on the tariff published by TNW — worth it if you plan to ride trams the same day.

For Saint-Louis and onward into France, the Distribus line 11 shuttle at 3 EUR is the budget choice.

Swiss pricing reality

Switzerland is expensive — there is no way around it. Taxis are metered on the Basel-Stadt cantonal tariff: 6.50 CHF to start, plus 4.00 CHF per km inside Basel on weekdays 06:00-20:00 and 4.50 CHF per km at night, on Sundays and outside the city. The airport sits outside the city boundary, so the run into central Basel is largely on the higher rate and works out at roughly 40-50 CHF — steep for a 15-minute ride, but normal by Swiss standards. These are maximum rates set by the canton and revised periodically, so check before you travel. A private transfer at 45-70 EUR is in the same range.

The saving grace is that Basel itself is compact. Once at SBB, you can walk or tram to most hotels for minimal cost. Basel even gives hotel guests a free BaselCard for unlimited public transport during their stay.

French pricing advantage

If you are heading to Mulhouse, Saint-Louis, or Alsatian towns on the French side, prices drop noticeably. French taxis are metered at lower per-km rates than Swiss ones, and the Distribus line 11 shuttle to Saint-Louis station costs just 3 EUR. French airport taxi fares are set by the Haut-Rhin prefecture rather than posted as a flat airport rate — ask the driver for the tariff card before setting off.

The Freiburg problem

Freiburg is better served than most people expect. Freiburger Reisedienst runs a direct Airportbus between EuroAirport and Freiburg several times a day — check freiburger-reisedienst.de for the current fare and timetable. The alternative is Bus 50 to Basel SBB and then a train to Freiburg; Deutsche Bahn and SBB publish those fares, which vary by how far ahead you book.

A private transfer does it in 60-70 minutes for 100-150 EUR — worth it if you are a group splitting the cost.

Currency tips

The airport accepts both CHF and EUR in most outlets. ATMs on the Swiss side dispense CHF; French-side ATMs dispense EUR. If you are staying in Basel, you need CHF — though many Basel shops accept EUR at a slightly unfavorable rate.

Bottom line

Basel: Bus 50 is the obvious choice unless you have heavy luggage or arrive late. Saint-Louis and Mulhouse: Distribus line 11, then the train. Freiburg: the direct Airportbus, or a private transfer if you are a group.
