What It Actually Costs to Get from Gold Coast Airport to Your Hotel

Gold Coast Airport sits at Coolangatta, the southernmost point of the Gold Coast strip. Most visitors are heading north to Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach, while some are heading south to Byron Bay across the NSW border.

Surfers Paradise (25 km, 25-35 minutes)

The 777 bus plus the G:link tram costs a flat 50 cents. Translink charges 50 cents for every journey in South East Queensland, and a go card, a contactless bank card and a paper ticket all cost the same (the network is cashless). A metered taxi comes to roughly $75-90 AUD: Queensland's maximum tariff is $3.80 flagfall from 7am to 7pm on weekdays ($6.20 at all other times) plus $2.77 per kilometre and $1.04 per minute while stopped, effective 1 July 2026. A private transfer typically costs $70-110 AUD for the vehicle. Rideshare fares are set by the app and move with demand, so check the quote before requesting.

Broadbeach (20 km, 20-30 minutes)

The bus and tram fare is the same flat 50 cents. On the Queensland tariff a metered taxi over 20 km works out at roughly $60-75 AUD. Private transfers are slightly less than the Surfers Paradise rate at around $65-100 AUD for the vehicle. Rideshare pricing is set by the app.

Coolangatta and Tweed Heads (2-5 km, 5-10 minutes)

If your hotel is nearby the meter barely gets going: 2-5 km on the Queensland tariff is roughly $10-22 AUD depending on the distance and the time of day. The bus works too, at the flat 50 cents, and walking is even possible for some hotels in Coolangatta itself.

Byron Bay (95 km, 50-70 minutes)

There is no direct public transport link. At 95 km a metered taxi on the Queensland tariff would pass $250, so drivers normally quote a fixed price for the cross-border run — agree it before you set off. Private transfers cost $100-160 AUD. Rideshare availability is inconsistent for cross-border trips and the fare is whatever the app quotes at the time. For groups, a private transfer to Byron Bay is often the best value when split.

Main Beach and Southport (30 km, 30-40 minutes)

A metered taxi over 30 km works out at roughly $90-105 AUD on the Queensland tariff. Private transfer runs $80-120 AUD. The bus gets you to Broadbeach South from where you can transfer to the G:link tram northward — still one flat 50-cent fare, but it adds time.

What Adds to the Cost

Rideshare pricing rises with demand at peak hours and late at night, and the app quote is the only reliable number. Taxi meters run faster in heavy traffic because the tariff charges $1.04 a minute whenever the car is stopped, and a phone booking adds a $1.90 booking fee. The 777 bus fare does not change with the ticket type — it is 50 cents whatever you tap. There are generally no tolls on Gold Coast routes, which is one less thing to worry about.

Best Value Summary

Solo backpacker to Surfers: the bus and tram at 50 cents, and nothing else comes close. Family of four to Broadbeach: at 50 cents a head the bus is still far cheaper, but a private transfer at $65-100 AUD buys child seats, luggage space and a door-to-door run with tired kids. Group heading to Byron Bay: a private transfer at $100-160 AUD split four ways is $25-40 AUD each and saves negotiating a cross-border taxi fare.
