Key findings

• Northern Europe is the most expensive place to leave an airport by car. Oslo Gardermoen (€204), Stockholm Arlanda (€172) and Keflavík (€172) all sit above €170 for a sedan; the 40–50 km distance to town and high local wage costs both show up in the price.
• Italy is the most expensive large market: across 15 Italian airports the median sedan price is €100, with Milan Malpensa, Rome Fiumicino and Florence at €150 or more.
• Egypt, Vietnam and Thailand are the cheapest. A private sedan from Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh costs €8–10; the Egyptian median is €10 and Vietnam's is €16.
• Sharing changes the picture: a van for 4–8 passengers costs a median 34% more than a sedan, so a family of four pays about €18.75 per person, below two single train tickets at many European airports.
• Small airports can be the dearest per kilometre: Grand Cayman, Samedan/St. Moritz and Naples (Florida) exceed €25 per km because the car, driver and meet-and-greet cost the same whether the trip is 3 km or 40.

Methodology

The index takes, for every airport in the Airport Transfer Portal catalogue, the cheapest price a customer could actually book on 7 November 2026 for a private one-way transfer from the airport to the zone marked as the city centre, for a sedan carrying 1–3 passengers and for a van carrying 4–8. Prices are what the customer pays, including meet-and-greet at arrivals with a name sign, flight tracking, 60 minutes of waiting time, tolls and parking; they exclude gratuities and child seats. Only verified, active local operators are counted. Non-euro prices are converted at the European Central Bank reference rates of the same day. Airports without a bookable city-centre route are excluded, which leaves 402 airports in 155 countries. Distances are road distances recorded in the catalogue; airports without one appear in the price tables but not in the per-kilometre analysis. Transfer prices move with season and demand; these figures are a one-day snapshot for comparing airports, not a quote.
