Getting from Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport to Salerno and the Amalfi Coast

Salerno Costa d'Amalfi (QSR) is Campania's "new" airport, reopened in July 2024 after a runway extension. It sits in Pontecagnano Faiano, 17 km east of Salerno and roughly 70 km southeast of Naples. It has become the most significant direct gateway to the Amalfi Coast. The official Salerno Airlink bus (Trenitalia / Busitalia Campania) runs direct to Salerno station in about 30-40 minutes for €8.00 one-way (fare effective 1 June 2026 — check trenitalia.com before you travel, as fares are revised). A taxi to Salerno city runs a fixed €50 under the airport's official municipal tariff agreement; there is no published fixed tariff to the Amalfi Coast or Naples, so agree the fare with the driver before you set off. Uber Black works in Naples and is limited in Campania; Free Now (formerly MyTaxi) also operates, but neither is reliable for an airport pickup here. A pre-booked transfer is priced individually by each operator at the time of booking. Huge tourism significance — most travelers here are heading straight to the coast.

QSR was a regional airfield that reopened commercially in July 2024 after a major runway extension. As of 2026 it is served by Ryanair, Wizz Air, easyJet, Volotea, and seasonal charters, with routes from London, Dublin, Berlin, Vienna, Brussels, Warsaw, Budapest, and domestic Italian cities. Traffic is still modest compared to Naples Capodichino (NAP) but growing fast — peak months (May-October) are hectic with multiple wide-body charter arrivals.

After landing: The terminal is small and modern. Schengen formalities are a spot-check; UK and US passport-holders go through a quicker secondary line with full checks but processing is generally fast. Baggage claim has two belts and can be slow at peak times — 25-40 minutes for a busy afternoon wave.

Arrivals hall: Compact, clearly laid out. Car rental counters (Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Maggiore, Locauto — book well ahead in summer). Tourist info desk, a café, a small shop. The exit leads to a forecourt with the shuttle stop, bus stop, and taxi rank.

Summer reality: QSR is a "one-shot" airport — most people arrive and immediately want to head onto the coast. At 15:00-18:00 in July and August, the taxi rank queue can reach 20-40 minutes. If you have a hotel transfer pre-booked, you walk past all of that.

Local bus to Pontecagnano station + regional train to Salerno: A local urban bus also connects the airport to Pontecagnano-Faiano train station (about 3 km), from where regional trains run to Salerno centrale every 20-40 minutes, taking about 10 minutes. Both legs use standard UnicoCampania urban/regional fares — check unicocampania.it for the current combined price before you travel. Workable if you are solo with light luggage, tricky with big bags because of the short transfer at the station.

Salerno Airlink (official airport bus) to Salerno: Trenitalia and Busitalia Campania run a direct bus from the terminal to Salerno station, timed around flight arrivals, taking about 30-40 minutes. The one-way fare is €8.00 (effective 1 June 2026) — buy it combined with a train ticket on Trenitalia, on board from the driver, or at Trenitalia sales points. Check trenitalia.com for the current fare, since it is revised periodically.

SITA Sud buses along the Amalfi Coast: SITA Sud is the classic Amalfi Coast bus company. From Salerno Concordia stop (next to the train station), SITA buses run along the Amalfi Coast to Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Amalfi, Positano, and onward toward Sorrento. Tickets follow the UnicoCampania zone system — for example Salerno-Amalfi is about €2.80 one-way — with a 24-hour "Costierasita" tourist pass covering the whole coast for about €10. Check sitasudtrasporti.it or unicocampania.it for the current fare to your stop. Journey times are long — Salerno to Positano is 1h 30min - 2h when the road is busy. Buses are hot, crowded, and sometimes full in summer. Not an option for heavy luggage or motion-sensitive travelers.

Taxi: Supervised rank at the terminal. To Salerno city (station or the Masuccio Salernitano ferry port), Battipaglia, Pontecagnano Faiano, or Bellizzi, taxis run on official fixed fares agreed jointly by those four municipalities (in force since July 2024, for up to 4 passengers with one case each): €50 to Salerno, €35 to Battipaglia, €25 to Pontecagnano Faiano, €15 to Bellizzi. For the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Naples, Pompeii, Paestum, and other longer routes, there is no published fixed tariff — the ride runs on the meter or as a negotiated flat rate, so agree the price with the driver before you set off. Italian taxis accept card but bring cash — rural Campania drivers sometimes have "machine issues."

Uber / Free Now / Bolt: In Italy, Uber only operates as UberBlack / UberLux (licensed NCC drivers) in major cities — it is not a cheap ride-hailing service. Uber is effectively unavailable at QSR itself but can sometimes be summoned in Salerno city. Free Now works in Naples and surrounding areas but driver supply at QSR is limited. Bolt has some Italian coverage but is patchy in the south. Do not count on any of these for a guaranteed airport pickup.

Pre-booked transfer (NCC): The standard choice for Amalfi Coast travelers. Each operator sets its own fixed price at booking, so it is worth comparing quotes for your exact date, destination, and vehicle size — a minivan typically costs more than a sedan. Driver meets you inside arrivals with a name sign. No surge pricing and no taxi-queue stress on a 35°C August afternoon.

Ferry connection: Salerno's ferry port (Molo Manfredi / Piazza della Concordia) is a major summer hub for boats to Amalfi, Positano, Capri, Ischia, and Sorrento. Many travelers go QSR → Salerno taxi/transfer → ferry for a scenic and often faster coastal connection — especially to Positano (ferry roughly 35 minutes versus 90+ minutes by road in summer traffic). Check the current ferry operators' timetables and fares before you travel.

Notes: Only the Salerno / Battipaglia / Pontecagnano Faiano / Bellizzi fares above are official fixed tariffs, set jointly by those municipalities for up to 4 passengers with one case each — confirm the current amount with the airport or a local taxi operator before you travel, since municipal tariffs are revised periodically. For every other destination, no authority publishes a fixed long-distance rate: agree the taxi price (or compare pre-booked transfer quotes) before departure. Amalfi Coast road traffic can add 30-60 minutes to any trip in peak months. For Positano especially, consider ferry via Salerno for speed and comfort.

QSR currently has a light late-night schedule. Some Ryanair and Wizz flights land in the 22:00-00:30 window, but there is no significant overnight operation.

The bus, train, and Salerno Airlink services stop around 22:00-22:30. After that, public transport is not an option. SITA coast buses finish earlier still — do not plan to reach Positano by bus at midnight.

Taxis meet scheduled flights and a marshal is usually on hand during peak season. On a delayed late arrival off-season, expect 10-25 minutes. A night tariff supplement typically applies for late-night trips outside the officially tariffed Salerno/Battipaglia/Pontecagnano/Bellizzi routes — confirm with the driver.

Uber / Free Now / Bolt are not a late-night plan here.

Pre-booked transfer is strongly recommended for any arrival after 22:00, especially if you're heading to the Amalfi Coast. Drivers track the flight and will wait. Given that the coast road at night, with tired drivers and hairpin turns, is genuinely unpleasant — this is one of those bookings where paying for a professional makes a clear difference.

QSR is a manageable family airport — compact, mostly level access, clear signage. The real challenge is not the airport but the onward drive. The SS163 Amalfi Coast road is narrow, cliff-hugging, and carsickness-inducing for some kids. Plan for that.

Child seats: Italian taxis are exempt from child-seat rules for commercial trips, but it is still safer to pre-book a transfer with booster/child seats specified — ask the operator for the exact surcharge when you book. Rental car companies can also supply seats for an extra daily fee — confirm the current price with the rental desk.

Luggage: The local bus + train option requires a short transfer at Pontecagnano — manageable with 1-2 bags, awkward with 3+. SITA Sud coast buses have almost no luggage space in peak season — avoid with big suitcases. For families with 3+ suitcases and a buggy, a pre-booked minivan transfer is the sensible choice.

Amalfi Coast driveway warning: Many hotels in Positano, Amalfi, and Praiano are reached by hundreds of steps or narrow lanes where a normal sedan cannot go. Your driver will usually drop you as close as possible, and you carry bags from there. Confirm drop-off details with your hotel ahead of time.

Local bus to Pontecagnano station / Salerno Airlink to Salerno: Clearly signposted stop on the forecourt outside arrivals, about 30 m from the door. Tickets from a small counter in arrivals or onboard. Look for the digital display with the next departures.

Taxi: Official rank immediately outside. White cars with a TAXI roof sign and the Comune di Pontecagnano / Salerno license. A marshal supervises peak hours.

Pre-booked transfer: Driver waits inside the arrivals hall at the exit from baggage claim, holding a name sign. This is the standard and most used option for Amalfi-bound travelers.

NCC / Uber Black: Designated pickup area on the forecourt, as instructed by the app. Driver supply is limited — do not rely on summoning a car.

Car rental: Desks line the arrivals hall. Lots are within a short walk of the terminal. Summer queues at check-in can be 30-60 minutes.
