Newcastle Airport is manageable, the city is family-friendly, and transport is affordable. Here's how to handle it.
Metro with kids
An adult single is capped at 2.50 GBP on a Pop Pay As You Go card or contactless, and under-21s pay 1 GBP per single journey under The Mayor's Fares (Travel North East, since 1 April 2026). Check nexus.org.uk for the current rules on younger children and free travel. It's about a 25-minute ride to the city centre.
With one child and a suitcase: easy. The Metro isn't as cramped as London Underground. With a stroller and multiple bags: doable but you'll appreciate the help of a partner. The platform has step-free access.
Taxi with kids
The airport's on-site taxi service quotes a fixed, all-inclusive fare before you travel, and the fleet includes estate cars, executive estates and 5-8 passenger vehicles as well as wheelchair-accessible vehicles (Newcastle International Airport) — so there is room for a stroller if you ask for the right vehicle.
Child seats: UK taxis are exempt from child seat requirements. Drivers don't carry them. If car seat safety matters (and it should for long rides), book a transfer.
