Male Velana Airport (MLE) Transfer Guide

Velana International Airport sits on Hulhule Island, next to Male city. Two things matter here, and older guides get the first one wrong.

The airport is connected to Male by road. The Sinamale Bridge, opened in August 2018, links Male, Velana International Airport and Hulhumale, so land transport between them is entirely normal — there are taxis, and MTCC runs bus services from the airport. The airport also operates a passenger ferry across to Male around the clock: every 10 minutes from 06:00 to 23:59, and every 30 minutes from 00:00 to 06:00 (Maldives Airports Company Limited). Tickets are sold at the ticketing counter at the jetty.

Your resort is a different problem entirely. If you are going to a resort island, the bridge is irrelevant and the transfer depends on which atoll you are in: nearby resorts use speedboats, distant atolls require seaplanes, and some need a domestic flight plus another boat. That leg is almost always arranged by the resort, and it is where the real cost sits. Seaplanes do not fly after dark, which is the single most important scheduling fact in the Maldives.

Fares for the ferry, speedboats and seaplanes are not published in one authoritative place, so we do not quote figures here — confirm the cost with your resort or at the counter before you commit.

After clearing immigration and customs at Velana, you exit into the arrivals hall. It can feel chaotic, especially when multiple international flights land close together. Representatives from resorts and transfer companies will be holding signs with guest names. If you have a resort booking, your transfer is almost always pre-arranged by the resort itself.

If you are heading to Male city or a guesthouse on a local island, you have a choice the older guides do not mention: since the Sinamale Bridge opened in 2018 you can simply drive across, by taxi or on an MTCC bus, or you can take the ferry from the jetty a short walk from the terminal. Both work. For seaplane transfers, you will be directed to the seaplane terminal, which is adjacent to the main terminal.

Important: seaplanes do not fly after dark. If your flight arrives late in the afternoon, you may need to spend a night near the airport or in Male before catching a seaplane the next morning. Confirm the cut-off with your resort — it moves with the season and the sunset, so treat any fixed clock time you read online with suspicion.

Public ferry to Male city: The cheapest option. It runs every 10 minutes from 06:00 to 23:59 and every 30 minutes from 00:00 to 06:00 — in other words, around the clock — and the crossing takes about 10 minutes. Taxi across the bridge: Since the Sinamale Bridge opened in 2018, a taxi from the terminal to Male is a normal road journey of a few kilometres. This is the option most older guides tell you does not exist. Agree the fare or confirm the meter before you set off.

MTCC buses: MTCC runs an Airport Express service and an Airport–Hulhumale–Airport bus roughly every 30 minutes, over the bridge. Cheap and useful if you are staying in Hulhumale, which many budget travellers now are.

Private speedboat to Male: A dedicated boat, available on your schedule. Useful if you are arriving with a lot of luggage or want to be dropped closer to your hotel. Quoted per boat rather than per person, so it improves with group size — get the quote in writing when you book.

Resort speedboat transfer: Most resorts in North and South Male Atoll arrange speedboat transfers directly, and the resort coordinates everything. The cost is set by the resort, is usually charged per person round trip, and varies enormously — ask for the exact figure at the time you book your room, not on arrival.

Seaplane transfer: For resorts in more distant atolls like Ari, Baa, or Dhaalu. Operated primarily by Trans Maldivian Airways and Maldivian. Booked through your resort and priced per person round trip. Daylight hours only — this constrains your whole itinerary, so plan around it.

Domestic flight plus speedboat: For the most distant atolls, you fly domestically to a regional airport and then take a speedboat to your resort. This is arranged by the resort.

The Maldives is expensive to move around by global standards, and it is also the airport in this guide where we can verify the least. Nobody publishes a single authoritative price list: resort transfers are set by each resort, seaplane seats are sold through the resorts rather than at a public tariff, and the ferry fare is not on the airport's own website. So rather than print numbers that would be invented, here is the structure you are actually dealing with:

• Male city by ferry: the cheapest way across, tickets sold at the counter at the jetty. Runs 24 hours
• Male city by taxi over the Sinamale Bridge: a short road trip, now that the bridge exists
• Male city by MTCC bus: cheapest road option, roughly every 30 minutes
• Male city by private speedboat: priced per boat, not per person, so it gets better with group size
• North and South Male Atoll resorts: speedboat, 15-90 minutes, priced per person by the resort
• Ari, Baa, Noonu, Raa and similar: seaplane, priced per person by the resort, daylight only
• Far southern atolls (Laamu, Addu): domestic flight plus speedboat, arranged by the resort

The rule that matters: get the transfer cost in writing from your resort when you book the room, before you fly. In the Maldives the transfer is frequently a significant fraction of the holiday cost and it is not optional — there is no walk-up alternative to a resort island. Being surprised by it at the counter, after a long flight, is a genuinely bad experience and an avoidable one.

Many international flights arrive in Male late at night or in the early hours. The good news is that reaching Male itself is not a problem: the airport ferry runs 24 hours (every 30 minutes between midnight and 06:00), and the Sinamale Bridge means a taxi can drive you across at any hour.

The real constraint is seaplanes, which do not fly after dark. If your resort requires a seaplane and you land in the late afternoon or at night, you will almost certainly need to overnight near the airport or in Male and fly out the next morning.

Some resorts arrange this automatically, putting you in a transit hotel and scheduling your seaplane for the next morning. Others leave it to you, and it is not always clear which kind you have booked until you ask. Check with your resort before travelling, and get the answer in writing — including who pays for the transit hotel. For speedboat resorts, late-night transfers are sometimes available but usually cost more and need to be arranged specifically.

Traveling with children in the Maldives transfer system requires planning. Seaplanes have strict luggage limits with limited cabin space — tighter than your international flight, and set by the operator, so check the exact allowance with your resort before you pack rather than assuming. Excess luggage can sometimes follow on a later flight but this needs to be arranged.

Speedboats in open ocean can be rough, especially during the southwest monsoon season (May to October). Young children and elderly travelers should be aware of this. Life jackets are provided but the ride can be bumpy and wet.

For families, the airport has a reasonable waiting area, and the seaplane terminal has a lounge. If you are overnighting before a morning seaplane, some transit hotels offer family rooms. Pack essentials in your carry-on since checked bags sometimes arrive on a different speedboat or seaplane than you do.

At Velana, your transfer representative will be waiting in the arrivals hall with a sign bearing your name or your resort name. For resort transfers, look for the resort's branded counter or representative in the arrivals area. For private transfers to Male, the driver or boat captain will coordinate via phone or WhatsApp.

If you are taking the public ferry, exit the airport terminal and follow signs to the ferry terminal, which is a five-minute walk. Ferries to Male depart from the clearly marked jetty.

Book a resort transfer if: you are staying at a resort. You almost certainly have to — it is usually the only way to reach the island — so the real task is pinning down the price in advance.

Take a taxi over the bridge if: you are heading to Male or Hulhumale at any hour and want the simplest door-to-door option. This exists now; it did not before 2018.

Take the public ferry if: you are heading to Male city, travelling light, and comfortable navigating on your own. It runs 24 hours, so this is not just a daytime option.

Book a private speedboat if: you want to be dropped closer to your hotel, have heavy luggage, or are in a group — it is priced per boat, so it improves as you add people.

Arrange an overnight near the airport if: your flight lands late in the day and your resort requires a seaplane. Do not leave this to chance, and settle in advance who is paying for it.
