Pre-paid taxi — a fixed fare per destination, set at the counter and printed on a slip you hand to the driver. Read the rate card before you pay. Fares do not change with traffic or the hour, which is the main attraction.
Uber / Ola — dynamic. The same route genuinely can cost half as much at midnight as at 9 AM, and surge bites hardest between midnight and 2 AM when the Gulf flights land together. Check the app.
Private transfer — priced by the provider and fixed when you book. Get it in writing, including whether tolls are included.
Longer runs — Mahabalipuram (about 55 km) and Pondicherry (about 150 km) have no published fare from anyone. Get a written quote.
The Traffic Factor
Pricing in Chennai cannot be separated from traffic. Uber and Ola use dynamic pricing, which means the same route can cost far more at 9 AM than at midnight. Pre-paid taxis charge their posted rate regardless of traffic, but you pay in time rather than money — a 30-minute late-night ride becomes a 75-minute crawl during rush hour.
If you are arriving during peak hours (8–10 AM, 5–8 PM), a private transfer with a fixed price shields you from surge pricing, even if the fare is higher than the base Uber rate.
Hidden Costs to Watch
Tolls. The elevated highway from the airport to the city is tolled. Some services include this in the fare, others add it on top. Ask when booking — the toll itself is posted at the plaza.
Airport entry fee. Airports in India commonly charge vehicles a parking or entry fee for the pick-up area. This may be absorbed by the operator or passed on to you; ask when booking.
Waiting charges. If your flight is delayed and you have a pre-booked transfer, check whether the company charges for extended waiting. Most include 30–60 minutes of free waiting for international arrivals.
Payment Methods
Pre-paid taxis accept cash only (Indian rupees). Uber and Ola accept card, UPI, and cash through the app. Private transfer companies usually accept card payment during online booking, or cash on arrival. ATMs are available in the arrivals hall.
