Mattala has no meters and no published tariff - transport here is almost entirely pre-arranged private cars, priced by whichever operator you book with. So this page gives you distances and drive times rather than fare ranges: Sri Lankan fuel prices and the LKR rate both move, and any figures we printed would go stale without telling you. Because you have to book ahead anyway, you can compare real quotes before you fly.

Why prices vary
Sri Lanka's economy has experienced significant fluctuations in recent years, which directly impacts transport pricing. Fuel costs, the LKR exchange rate, and vehicle type all play a role. An air-conditioned sedan costs less than a larger vehicle. Booking in advance through a transfer platform usually gets you a better rate than negotiating on the ground — assuming you can even find a driver at Mattala.
Payment options
Pre-booked transfers are typically paid online at the time of booking or on completion. If you end up paying a local driver directly, Sri Lankan Rupees are preferred, though many will accept USD at their own exchange rate (which may not be favorable to you).
How to think about value
The cost from Mattala needs to be weighed against the alternative: flying into Colombo and paying for a 4-5 hour car hire south - a much longer drive, a much bigger bill, and half a day gone. If Mattala has a flight that drops you an hour from your destination instead of five, the short transfer is excellent value by comparison. Price both before you book the flight; that comparison is the real decision here.
Tipping
Tipping drivers in Sri Lanka is common. For a short transfer to Hambantota, rounding up is fine. For a longer drive to Yala or Tangalle, a little more is appreciated.
