What affects the price
Taxis in Fukuoka are metered and reliable. The tariff changed on 1 July 2026: the initial fare is JPY 600 for the first 1.1 km, then JPY 100 for every 287 m, with a 20% late-night surcharge between 22:00 and 05:00. Those figures come from the Fukuoka City Taxi Association. Applying them to the short airport run gives roughly JPY 1,500-2,000 into Hakata.
If you are reading an older guide, you may see JPY 830 for the first 1.6 km with JPY 80 increments — that was the previous tariff, and it is no longer current. Tariffs are revised periodically, so check before you travel.
Traffic rarely causes significant delays given the short distance. Rush hour might add 5-10 minutes and a few hundred yen to a taxi fare, but that is the worst case.
The subway is flat-rate regardless of time, making it the best value by far. An IC card (Suica, Pasmo, nimoca) saves you from buying individual tickets.
When a transfer makes sense
For solo travellers or couples, the subway is so fast and cheap that a pre-booked transfer is hard to justify. But for groups of 3-4 with heavy luggage, a EUR 30-50 minivan split between everyone is comparable to two taxi fares and more comfortable. Families with child seat requirements should book in advance since Japanese taxis do not carry them.
Hidden costs to know about
There are none. Japan does not have a tipping culture, tolls are not relevant for the short city ride, and the subway price includes everything. What you see is what you pay.
