Venice Marco Polo Airport to the city: what you actually need to know

Venice Marco Polo Airport is on the mainland shore of the lagoon. The unique thing about Venice is that there are no roads into the island city: vehicles can only go as far as Piazzale Roma on the edge of Venice, or Mestre on the mainland. Beyond Piazzale Roma, reaching your hotel on the island means a walk or a boat, depending on where it is.

Your main options: Alilaguna water bus (EUR 18 to Venice, EUR 10 to Murano, per Alilaguna's own fare table), ATVO express bus to Piazzale Roma (EUR 12 single, about 20 minutes, then walk or vaporetto), private water taxi (priced per boat; ask the price before boarding or take it from your booking), or a land taxi to Mestre (confirm the fare with the driver). There is no single 'right' answer: it depends on where your accommodation is.

After landing, immigration and baggage are straightforward. Alilaguna has ticket offices in the arrivals hall (07:30-23:00), at the entrance of the moving walkway (08:00-21:00) and at the Darsena water-side dock (06:00-00:20). Buses depart from Exit D: the ATVO stops are in the second lane on the left, stop 3 for Venice and stop 4 for Mestre. Water taxi operators and hotel representatives may approach you; agree the price before boarding.

Private water taxi (motoscafo) is usually the most expensive option. It takes you from the airport dock to the dock nearest your hotel, or as close as the canals allow. The fare is per boat, not per person, which makes it far more reasonable per head for a couple or small group than for a solo traveller. Ask for the price before boarding or take it from your booking.

Alilaguna water bus is the public boat service. The Blue line (Blu) goes via Murano, Fondamente Nove and Lido to San Marco, Zattere, Tronchetto and the railway station. The Orange line (Arancio) goes via Guglie, San Stae and Rialto to Santa Maria del Giglio. The Red line (Rossa) is seasonal (April to November) and serves Murano, Lido and San Marco. Fare: EUR 18 Airport to Venice (EUR 32 round trip), EUR 10 to Murano (EUR 18 round trip), one heavy bag and one hand bag included, extra bags EUR 4, children under 6 free. ATVO bus to Piazzale Roma costs EUR 12 single (EUR 20 return) and takes about 20 minutes; luggage is included. Piazzale Roma is the road terminus at the edge of Venice. From there you walk, take the vaporetto (EUR 9.50 for 75 minutes), or arrange porters. The ACTV Aerobus is an alternative on a EUR 10 ticket (the ordinary EUR 9.50 city ticket does not cover journeys to or from the airport). The ATVO express also serves Mestre.

Land taxi to Mestre: confirm the fare with the driver. Mestre is on the mainland, not on the island; only relevant if your accommodation is in Mestre.

Pre-booked land transfer to Piazzale Roma or Mestre: fixed price quoted at booking. Useful for groups with heavy luggage.

Rental car: do not. There is no car access to Venice island. Only makes sense if you are heading to the mainland or driving onward after Venice.

The transport decision depends heavily on your accommodation:

Venice island: your options are water (Alilaguna or water taxi) or the bus to Piazzale Roma plus a walk or vaporetto. The walk from Piazzale Roma to most hotels involves bridges, steps, and narrow lanes with suitcases. A water taxi to your hotel's nearest dock is a very different experience.

Lido di Venezia: the Alilaguna Blue line serves Lido.

Murano: the Alilaguna Blue line (and the seasonal Red line) stops at Murano; the fare is EUR 10.

Mestre (mainland): ATVO bus, ACTV Aerobus or land taxi. No boat needed.

To Venice island (general):

• ATVO bus to Piazzale Roma: EUR 12 single (+ vaporetto EUR 9.50, or walking)
• Alilaguna: EUR 18 to Venice, EUR 10 to Murano
• Private water taxi: priced per boat; ask before boarding or take it from your booking

To Mestre (mainland):

• ACTV Aerobus: EUR 10 ticket
• Land taxi: confirm with the driver

To Piazzale Roma (road end of Venice):

• ATVO bus: EUR 12 single
• Land transfer: fixed price quoted at booking

The ATVO express runs late: the airport timetable shows departures for Piazzale Roma until 01:10, and the Alilaguna ticket office at the Darsena dock is open until 00:20. Check Alilaguna's timetable for the last boat on your line. If you arrive later, book a private water taxi or a land transfer in advance and confirm the pickup arrangement, the price and any night supplement when you book.

Venice with luggage is genuinely difficult: wheeled suitcases on cobblestones and up bridge steps is hard work. Getting as close to your hotel by boat as possible can be worth the premium of a water taxi. On the Alilaguna, one heavy bag and one hand bag are included per ticket and extra bags cost EUR 4; children under 6 travel free and strollers ride free. On the ATVO express, luggage is unlimited at no extra cost.

Choose the Alilaguna if you are on a budget, your accommodation is near a stop on its routes, and you do not have excessive luggage.

Choose the ATVO bus if your hotel is near Piazzale Roma or you are confident about vaporetto connections, and you want a low fare.

Choose the private water taxi if you want to be delivered close to your hotel (dock access varies), you are sharing one boat among a few people, or you have a lot of luggage.

Choose a land transfer to Piazzale Roma if your Venice hotel is near the road terminus and you have heavy luggage or a large group, and then arrange boat transport separately.
