Getting from Astana Airport to your destination

Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport (NQZ) is about 15 km from Astana city center, roughly 20-30 minutes by car. Kazakhstan uses the Tenge (₸/KZT), and public transport here is genuinely cheap: Astana's fare system charges 110 ₸ with an Onay transport card and 220 ₸ in cash for a single adult journey on a city route — paying cash costs exactly double, so the card is worth having (Astana's official fare payment system, transcard.kz). Children aged 7-18 with a valid school card travel free. Suburban-zone routes start at 110 ₸ by card and rise with the zone, so check which applies to your route.

For a car, the practical choice is a ride-hailing app (Yandex Go or InDrive), which prices each trip dynamically — the fare you are quoted in the app when you book is the only real number, and it is normally well below what the airport rank will ask a foreigner. A pre-booked private transfer is priced per vehicle and fixed before you travel. We do not print car fares for Astana: app pricing moves by the minute and nothing at the rank is published.

The one thing to plan for is the cold. Astana is one of the coldest capitals in the world, and in winter that turns transport choice into a comfort-and-safety decision rather than a money one.

The airport has a modern terminal built for Expo 2017. It's clean, well-organized, and handles international arrivals efficiently. After passport control (visa-free for many nationalities) and baggage claim, you exit into an arrivals hall with currency exchange counters and ATMs.

Outside, you'll find a taxi area and bus stop. The airport is modern and well-signposted in Kazakh, Russian, and English.

Important: Many taxi drivers speak limited English. Having your hotel address written in Russian (Cyrillic script) or saved on your phone with a map pin is very helpful.

Taxi (Yandex Go / InDrive) — The practical choice. Use Yandex Go (the dominant ride-hailing app in Central Asia) or InDrive. The app sets the price dynamically and shows it before you confirm, which both avoids the language problem and gives you a fair local price without negotiating. That quote is the only figure worth trusting — it changes with demand, weather and time of day.

Airport taxi rank — Official taxis outside arrivals. Rank drivers have a long-standing reputation for quoting foreigners well above the going rate, and rank prices are not published anywhere, so you have no reference point unless you open the app. Open Yandex Go before you speak to anyone — even if you then decide to take a rank car, you will know what the trip is actually worth. Agree the price before you get in.

Bus — The ultra-budget option; routes 10 and 12 serve the airport, and there is also an express service. Rental Car — Available but not recommended unless you are comfortable with Central Asian driving standards and road conditions, especially in winter. Astana has good public transport.

We have deliberately removed the euro conversions this page used to carry. Check the rate on the day if you need one — and note that ATMs at the airport give a fair rate, better than the exchange counters.

Astana takes international flights at all hours, including connections from Istanbul, Dubai and Moscow that land in the middle of the night. The buses stop well before that — check the operator's current last departure — which leaves ride-hailing, the rank, or a pre-booked transfer.

Yandex Go works around the clock in Astana and normally has cars available even in the small hours. Pricing is dynamic and typically firms up at night, so check the app rather than assuming. Set the app up before your flight: install it, link your card, and save your hotel address. The airport has free WiFi to help.

At the rank, the usual warning applies with more force at 3 AM: prices are not published, and drivers may try it on with a tired foreigner. Check the app for a reference price before you negotiate.

Winter warning: this is the real story at Astana, not the fare. Landing at 2 AM in January means walking out into -30°C or colder. That is not an exaggeration, and it changes the calculus completely: the point of pre-booking is that the driver waits inside the terminal. If you would rather use the app, request the car while still inside and walk out only when it has arrived. Never wait outside for more than a few minutes — frostbite on exposed skin can occur within 10-15 minutes at -30°C. Wear your warmest clothes on the plane.

App taxis are mostly standard sedans (Hyundai, Kia, Toyota). For a family with luggage, request a larger car category in the app — it costs more, but the app shows you how much before you confirm.

Child seats are rare in Kazakh taxis and are not something you can count on at the rank. If you need one, a pre-booked transfer where you request it in advance is the only reliable option; confirm availability and any charge at booking.

In winter, the deciding factor is not price but the walk to the car. A transfer driver meets you inside; an app driver does not.

Bus: Stop outside the terminal, signposted. Buy or top up an Onay card if you can — cash costs double.

App taxi (Yandex Go): Request from the app and meet at the pickup point outside arrivals. The app shows the car's licence plate. In winter, request from inside and walk out when it arrives.

Taxi rank: Outside arrivals. Agree the price before getting in.

Transfer: Driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign. They will have your phone number.

Use Yandex Go if: You have the app installed and are comfortable with ride-hailing. It is cheap, transparent, and sidesteps the language barrier entirely.

Take the bus if: You are travelling light and do not mind a slow ride with stops. At 110 ₸ with an Onay card it is one of the cheapest airport runs anywhere — just not in deep winter with bags.

Book a transfer if: You want a hassle-free arrival, do not have the local apps, are travelling with family, or are arriving in winter and would rather not wait outside.

Avoid random drivers who approach you inside the terminal. Use the official rank or an app — and check the app's price first either way.
