Getting from Newcastle Airport to your destination

Newcastle Airport (NCL) is about 10km northwest of the city center, and the Tyne and Wear Metro gets you there in about 25 minutes. Under The Mayor's Fares, in force since 1 April 2026, an adult single on the Metro is capped at 2.50 GBP when you pay with a Pop Pay As You Go card or contactless, and all-day travel is capped at 5.00 GBP; under-21s pay 1 GBP (Travel North East). Paper tickets from the machine cost more. The Metro is excellent — cheap, frequent, and the station is connected to the terminal. For most travelers, it's the obvious choice. Newcastle Airport is a single-terminal airport, medium-sized and easy to navigate. After baggage claim, you exit into the arrivals hall with car rental desks and a small shop area.

The Metro station is connected to the terminal — follow the signs and you'll be on the platform in about 5 minutes. It's one of the best airport Metro links in the UK.

Tyne and Wear Metro — The smart choice. The station is inside the airport. Trains run to Newcastle city centre (Haymarket, Monument or Central Station) in about 25 minutes, from roughly 05:30 (06:20 on Sundays) to midnight (Newcastle International Airport). An adult single is capped at 2.50 GBP on a Pop Pay As You Go card or contactless under The Mayor's Fares, with a 5.00 GBP all-day cap; under-21s pay 1 GBP (Travel North East, in force since 1 April 2026). Paper tickets from the machine cost more than the capped fare.

Taxi — The airport's dedicated on-site taxi service is Arrow Cars, which holds the exclusive pick-up point immediately outside arrivals and has a booking office in the arrivals hall staffed 24/7, plus self-service kiosks at the pick-up point. Its fares are fixed with all charges included, quoted before you travel, rather than metered (Newcastle International Airport). Get the quote before you set off.

Private Transfer — Pre-booked, fixed price, driver waiting. Useful for families and groups, and for destinations off the Metro line.

Bus (X77/X78) — Some bus services connect to the city but the Metro is faster and more convenient from the terminal. Buses aren't worth considering unless the Metro is down.

Rental Car — Available at the airport. Newcastle is drivable, and you might want a car for exploring Northumberland, Hadrian's Wall, or the Durham coast.

The Metro runs until about 11:30 PM (last train varies by day). After that, you need a taxi or transfer. The taxi rank has cars for late incoming flights. Pre-booked transfers are available 24/7.

Newcastle is famous for its nightlife, so late-night taxis in the city are busy on weekends. From the airport, though, supply is usually fine.

The Metro handles luggage reasonably well — there's floor space and it's a short ride. With a stroller and small kids, it's manageable but a taxi is more comfortable.

For families with young children needing car seats, pre-book a transfer. UK taxis don't typically carry child seats. A minivan transfer with seats included is quoted per vehicle when you book.

Metro: Follow signs inside the terminal to the Metro station. It's a short indoor walk — one of the most convenient airport rail links in the UK.

Transfer: Drivers wait in the arrivals hall or the short-stay car park. Meeting instructions are sent before your flight.

Take the Metro if: You're going to Newcastle city center, traveling with manageable luggage, and arriving before 11 PM. It's cheap, fast, and easy.

Take a taxi if: You have lots of luggage, it's late, or you're going somewhere not on the Metro line.

Book a transfer if: You're a family with child seats needed, a group wanting a minivan, heading to Durham/Alnwick/Northumberland, or arriving after the Metro closes.

Rent a car if: You're exploring Northumberland, Hadrian's Wall, or the coast. Newcastle itself doesn't need one.
