How Much Does a Transfer from Luxembourg Airport to the City Cost?

Luxembourg Airport is just 6 km from the city centre, and one of your options costs literally nothing. Here is what each transport mode will set you back in 2026.

Free bus: zero cost

Since 29 February 2020, all public transport in Luxembourg has been free for everyone, residents and visitors alike — only first-class rail tickets still cost anything. Bus line 16 runs from the airport to the city centre, stopping at Gare Centrale (the main train station) and Hamilius. No ticket, no card, no registration. You get on and ride. The journey takes about 25 minutes and buses run every 10-15 minutes during the day. This is the obvious choice for solo travellers and couples with light luggage.

From Gare Centrale or Hamilius, you can take the tram (also free) to other parts of the city. If your hotel is in Kirchberg, the bus or tram will get you there at no cost.

Taxi: read the tariff in the window

Here is the thing most guides get wrong about Luxembourg taxis: the fare is not regulated. Luxembourg's 2016 taxi law abolished the old maximum tariffs (and the separate airport taxi regulation with them) and introduced price freedom. Every operator now sets its own rates, and they differ noticeably from one company to the next — which is exactly why quoting you a single figure would be misleading.

What is true, and useful:

• The meter must be running for the whole journey.
• Every taxi must display its tariff grid visibly, on the rear passenger window and inside the car. By law that grid shows the rates, the supplements, the accepted payment methods and an indicative price for a 10 km daytime journey — which is the number to look at, since the airport is only 6 km out.
• You are free to choose any taxi on the rank. You are not obliged to take the first one in the queue.
• Taxis accept card payments. Tips are not expected but rounding up is appreciated.

So: read the grid, compare a couple of cars on the rank, and confirm the likely fare to your address with the driver before you set off.

Pre-booked private transfer

A private transfer is priced by each provider and fixed when you book. The advantage over a taxi is the certainty — a confirmed booking, a driver waiting for you, and a price agreed in advance rather than a tariff you have to read off a window. For the short distance to the city centre the practical difference is small. Where transfers become more valuable is for cross-border journeys or specific destinations.

Cross-border destinations

Luxembourg borders Belgium, France, and Germany, and many airport arrivals are heading to nearby cities in those countries — Trier (45-60 minutes), Metz (60-75 minutes), Arlon (30-40 minutes), Saarbrücken (about 90 minutes), Brussels (2.5-3 hours). No authority publishes fares for these routes and every provider prices them differently, so get a written quote when you book rather than trusting a range you read somewhere.

For these journeys a pre-booked transfer is almost always the better option compared to a taxi, because you fix the price for a long route in advance instead of watching a deregulated meter run for two hours.

Other domestic destinations

Luxembourg is one of Europe's smallest countries, so nothing is far — Esch-sur-Alzette, Echternach and Vianden are all short drives. You can reach any domestic destination by free public transport, though some routes require changes and take considerably longer. For a car, ask for a quote: as with everything else here, there is no official price list to quote from.

The honest assessment

If you are heading to Luxembourg City centre with a backpack or small suitcase, take the free bus. It is clean, frequent, perfectly comfortable, and it costs nothing — that is not a deal you have to think about. If you have heavy luggage, children, or are heading to a specific address, a taxi or private transfer is reasonable for the convenience; just check the price first, because nobody sets it for you. For cross-border destinations, a pre-booked transfer gives you the best combination of price certainty and door-to-door service.
