East Midlands Airport to Nottingham, Derby and Leicester — What You Actually Need to Know

East Midlands Airport (EMA) is located between three cities, about 20 km from Nottingham, 16 km from Derby, and 35 km from Leicester. There is no rail link. The Skylink bus is the main public transport option — it runs to Nottingham (50–60 minutes), Derby (30–40 minutes) and Leicester (75–90 minutes), operated by Kinchbus and trentbarton. Fares differ by route rather than being one flat price, and the operators publish them through their own fare finder, so check trentbarton.co.uk or kinchbus.co.uk for your journey. A taxi or a pre-booked transfer is the door-to-door alternative — agree the price before you set off.

This is not an airport with a quick hop to the city. Plan for a proper journey, especially if arriving late.

EMA has a single terminal that handles everything from Ryanair budget flights to holiday charters. It is compact and easy to navigate. Immigration is quick for UK and EU passport holders — the e-gates move things along. Non-EU visitors may wait 15–25 minutes.

Baggage reclaim is downstairs and usually takes 10–20 minutes. Once you exit into the arrivals hall, you will find a Costa Coffee, a WHSmith, and currency exchange. The bus stops are a short walk outside the terminal — follow the signs to the bus station area. The taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals exit.

Skylink buses are operated by trentbarton and are the backbone of EMA ground transport. The service is reliable during the day but becomes less frequent in the evening and overnight. Buses are comfortable with luggage space, but the journey to Nottingham is genuinely long — nearly an hour through suburban roads.

There is no train station at EMA. This is the airport's biggest drawback. Every journey requires road transport.

Skylink fares: Kinchbus and trentbarton set the fares and they vary by route — Derby, Nottingham and Leicester are not priced the same, so there is no flat airport fare. Returns, day tickets and reduced child fares are usually available, and contactless is accepted on board. Look your journey up on the operator's fare finder (trentbarton.co.uk / kinchbus.co.uk) before you travel. Note that England's GBP 3 national bus fare cap excludes airport services, so a Skylink airport fare above GBP 3 is normal and not an overcharge.

Taxis: fares are not published as a flat airport rate. Hackney carriage tariffs in England are set by the local council and step up to a higher rate late at night, while private-hire operators quote their own price. Ask for the fare when you book or before you set off. Derby is the closest of the three cities at 16 km, so it is the cheapest common taxi run; Leicester at 35 km is the most expensive.

Private transfer: A sedan to Nottingham costs GBP 45–60, a minivan GBP 60–80. To Derby, sedan GBP 30–45. To Leicester, sedan GBP 60–80.

The transfer column is a fixed price agreed when you book. The bus and taxi columns are left to the operator: Skylink fares vary by route and are published through the operators' fare finder, and taxi fares are not set as a flat airport rate.

EMA handles many charter and low-cost flights that arrive late. The Skylink bus runs a reduced overnight service — roughly every hour between midnight and 05:00, though not on all routes. The Nottingham service is the most reliable overnight; Derby and Leicester services are less frequent.

Taxis are available 24/7, but the number of cabs drops significantly after midnight. Waits of 20–30 minutes are common. Late-night taxi fares are higher — expect to add 20–30% to daytime rates.

A pre-booked transfer is the strongest option for late arrivals. The distances from EMA are long enough that waiting for an infrequent bus or a scarce taxi at 1 AM is genuinely unpleasant.

The Skylink bus has a luggage rack, but space is limited on busy services. If you are a family with multiple suitcases, pushchairs, and car seats, the bus journey — already long at 50–60 minutes — becomes significantly more difficult.

Taxis at EMA are mostly standard saloon cars with limited boot space. If you have more than two large suitcases, you may need a larger vehicle.

Private transfers let you specify vehicle size and request child car seats in advance. For families with young children, this is the most practical option given the long distances involved.

The airport itself is small and easy to navigate with children — short walks, clear signs, and a relaxed atmosphere compared to larger UK airports.

Skylink bus: The bus station is a 2-minute walk from the terminal exit. Follow the signs — it is well-marked.

Taxi: The rank is directly outside the arrivals exit. There is no formal queue management, but the process is orderly.

Pre-booked transfer: Drivers wait in the arrivals hall with a name sign or at the short-stay car park entrance. Instructions are provided after booking.

Uber / Bolt: Available in the East Midlands area, but coverage is inconsistent at the airport itself. Do not rely on it — you may wait a long time for a car to reach EMA.

Take the Skylink bus if: You are a solo traveler or couple heading to Nottingham or Derby during the day, traveling light, and not in a rush. It is cheap and reliable.

Take a taxi if: You are in a group, have significant luggage, or want to get to your destination faster. The per-person cost for 3–4 people is reasonable.

Book a transfer if: You are a family with children, arrive late at night, have a lot of luggage, or are heading to Leicester (where the bus takes 90 minutes). The distances from EMA make a comfortable vehicle genuinely worthwhile.

Important note: EMA is not close to any city. Whatever option you choose, allow for a proper journey time. This is not a 15-minute airport transfer — it is 30–60 minutes minimum.
