Catania Airport to the city and Sicily: what you actually need to know

Catania Fontanarossa Airport is just 5 km south of Catania city centre. It is one of the closest airports to a city in Italy. Getting to central Catania takes 10-20 minutes by taxi or about 20 minutes on the AMT Alibus, which costs EUR 4. Catania Airport is a medium-sized, single-terminal airport. After landing, immigration is generally fast. Baggage claim is straightforward. The arrivals hall has ATMs and standard services. The airport is notably close to the city, which means if you have a driver meeting you, they can usually be there within 10-15 minutes of your message. The proximity also means the first part of a longer journey (to Taormina, etc.) begins on fast roads before the scenic but slower ascents.

AMT bus (Alibus) runs from the airport to Catania's Stazione Centrale (main train station) and the city centre. Fare: EUR 4, and the same ticket is valid on all other AMT urban lines for 90 minutes (AMTS Catania). Journey time: approximately 20 minutes to the station, 25-30 minutes to the city centre. Buses depart every 25-30 minutes. This is the best budget option for solo travellers heading to Catania.

Interbus and other regional buses serve Taormina, Syracuse and Messina directly from the airport. The Taormina run takes about 75-90 minutes, Syracuse about 60-70 minutes. These buses are slow compared to a transfer but cost a small fraction of one, and run several times daily. Taxis are white and queue outside arrivals. The tariff is set by the Comune di Catania and includes fixed, predetermined fares for the airport run, so the standard airport-to-centre trip should be quoted at a set fare rather than metered. The comune revised both the meter tariff and the airport fixed fares during 2026, so ask for the tariffa predeterminata to your destination and check the current rates published by the comune before you travel — the rate card must be displayed in the car. For destinations outside the city the meter applies and drivers may quote freely.

Train (Trenitalia): The airport itself does not have a direct train connection. You take the AMT bus or a taxi to Catania Centrale, then trains to Syracuse (about 1 hour), Messina (about 75 minutes), or onward — fares are set by Trenitalia and vary by service and how far ahead you book, so check trenitalia.com. The metro line does not extend to the airport.

Car hire is available at the terminal. For exploring Sicily independently, a hire car is excellent. Sicilian roads outside cities are manageable. Parking in Catania centre and Taormina can be difficult. For Mount Etna excursions, a hire car is very practical.

Catania Airport is the primary entry point for eastern Sicily's most visited destinations.

To Taormina (55 km): The most popular destination from CTA. Interbus from the airport takes about 75-90 minutes; a pre-booked transfer about 55 minutes. Taormina sits high above the coast on a cliff — the final approach involves a steep ascent. Taxis within Taormina itself are limited, so a direct transfer to your hotel matters.

To Syracuse / Siracusa (65 km): Interbus from the airport, about 60-70 minutes; a transfer about 55 minutes. Alternatively, AMT bus to Catania Centrale + train to Syracuse (about 90 minutes total).

To Noto (90 km): A baroque architecture gem. No direct bus from the airport. A transfer takes about 80 minutes; otherwise train via Syracuse.

To Mount Etna (30-50 km depending on approach): The volcano is accessed via several routes. The Rifugio Sapienza cable car base is about 40 km north of the airport. Hiring a car for Etna gives maximum flexibility.

To Ragusa (120 km): About 110 minutes by road. No direct bus from the airport.

To Palermo (220 km): A long transfer or a domestic flight. Not practical by transfer unless sharing costs.

Bus fares are set by the operators (Interbus, AST) and transfer prices are fixed at booking — check the operator or quote your route rather than working from a figure in a guide, since both change.

Into Catania city, the one figure that is fixed and published is the bus:

• AMT Alibus: EUR 4, valid 90 minutes across AMT's urban network (AMTS Catania).
• Taxi: a fixed, predetermined airport fare set by the Comune di Catania. The comune revised it during 2026 — ask for the tariffa predeterminata and check the comune's current published rates.
• Pre-booked transfer: fixed at booking, so you know it before you land.

The AMT Alibus stops running late evening. Regional buses also stop in the evening. Taxis operate 24 hours, with a night supplement on top of the comune's tariff. For regional destinations arriving late at night, a pre-booked transfer is essential — finding a willing taxi for a 90-minute drive to Taormina at 2 AM is difficult and expensive without prior arrangement.

The airport is very close to the city, which simplifies family arrivals for Catania-bound travellers. For families heading to Taormina or the coast, a pre-booked transfer with child seats is the recommended choice. Taormina's hilltop position and narrow streets make the final approach to your hotel easier with a driver who knows the town than with a taxi arranged on arrival.

Choose the AMT bus if you are heading to Catania city centre or the train station and travelling light.
