How much it costs to get from Catania Airport into Sicily

Last updated: April 2026

Catania Airport sits 5 km from the city — one of the shortest airport-to-centre distances in Italy. City transfers are cheap. Regional destinations require more planning and budget.

AMT Alibus: EUR 4

The cheapest way to Catania city centre, and the one price here that is published and fixed: EUR 4, valid for 90 minutes across AMT's other urban lines too (AMTS Catania). The Alibus runs every 25-30 minutes to Stazione Centrale and the city centre. Journey time about 20 minutes. Functional and efficient for light travellers heading to the city.

Regional buses (Interbus, AST)

Interbus operates direct airport-to-destination services:

  • Taormina: approximately 75-90 minutes. Several departures daily.
  • Syracuse: approximately 60-70 minutes.
  • Messina: approximately 90 minutes.
  • Enna: direct service.

These buses are the budget option for regional travel — far cheaper than a transfer, at the cost of time and fixed stops. They work well for light-luggage travellers who are not pressed for time. Interbus sets and revises its own fares, so check interbus.it for the current fare and timetable on your route.

Taxi

Catania's taxi tariff is set by the Comune di Catania, and it includes fixed, predetermined fares for the airport run — so the standard trip into the centre or to the train station should be quoted at a set fare, not metered.

The comune revised both the meter tariff and the airport fixed fares during 2026. That means any figure printed in a guide is unreliable: ask for the tariffa predeterminata to your destination, check the comune's current published rates, and note that the rate card must be displayed in the car. A night supplement applies on top.

For regional destinations outside the city, the meter applies and fares are much higher. It is worth pre-booking rather than negotiating for long-distance trips.

Pre-booked transfer to Catania city

The distances and drive times are the stable part of this table — they are what actually drives the cost. Transfer prices are quoted when you book and bus fares are set by the operators, both of which change; quote your own route rather than budgeting from a number in a guide.

Taormina: why the transfer price reflects reality

Taormina is 55 km from the airport but involves significant elevation gain on the approach. The town sits at 250 metres above sea level. The final 5-10 km is on winding ascent roads. Transfer time of 55-65 minutes is realistic. Drivers who specialise in Taormina transfers know which entrance to use for which hotel area.

Mount Etna pricing note

Etna has multiple access points. The main tourist approach is via Rifugio Sapienza on the south slope (reached from the Nicolosi direction), about 40 km from the airport and 50-60 minutes by road. For a full day excursion, car hire is more flexible. For a one-way or round-trip drop to the cable car, a transfer is clean and the price is fixed at booking.

The group calculation

The arithmetic that matters for Taormina is per-person. A transfer is priced per vehicle, so divide the quote by the number of passengers; the bus is priced per person, so multiply. At three or four passengers the two get close, and the transfer delivers you door to hotel without the waiting, the connection or the luggage management. For a solo traveller the gap is wide and the bus wins on cost alone. Get a transfer quote for your date and check the Interbus fare on interbus.it, then do the division — the answer flips depending on your group size.
