Pokhara Airport (PKR) Transfer Guide

Pokhara International Airport (the new airport that replaced the old domestic one) is located about 4 km east of Lakeside (the main tourist area along Phewa Lake). The drive takes 15-25 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis here have no meters and no published tariff -- you agree the fare with the driver before you get in, and what you pay depends on your bargaining and the season. Pre-booked transfers are available for a fixed rate. There is no public bus service directly from the airport terminal, though local buses pass on the main road if you are willing to walk.

Pokhara's new international airport opened to replace the old one closer to town. The terminal is modern by Nepali standards, though still small. After landing, you walk to the terminal, collect bags from the carousel (or sometimes from a counter for small planes), and exit into the arrivals area. Outside, you will find taxi drivers offering rides. There is no formal taxi queue system like in Western airports. Drivers will approach you. This is normal and not a cause for concern -- it is simply how it works in Nepal. If you have a pre-booked transfer, your driver will be holding a sign with your name near the exit.

Local taxis are the standard way to get to Lakeside or other parts of Pokhara. These are small cars (often Suzuki Altos or similar). Fares are negotiated before you get in -- there are no meters and no official rate card to appeal to, so the price is whatever you and the driver agree. Ask your hotel what they consider a fair fare for your destination before you land, so you have a reference point. Negotiate politely but firmly, and settle the number before the bags go in the boot.

Pre-booked private transfers give you a fixed price and a driver waiting specifically for you. Vehicles tend to be newer and more comfortable. The price is agreed before you travel, which removes the bargaining element entirely.

Local buses run along the main road near the airport, but they do not come to the terminal itself. You would need to walk to the highway. With luggage, this is impractical for most travelers.

Motorbike taxis exist informally but are not advisable with luggage or for first-time visitors.

Rental vehicles are not available at the airport in a Western rental-car sense. You can arrange a car with a driver through your hotel or a local agency.

Because taxi fares here are negotiated rather than metered or published, there is no honest fixed figure we can quote for them -- any number you see online is someone's guess, and drivers quote to the traveller in front of them. What we can tell you is the shape of the trip, roughly in ascending order of distance and price:

• Pokhara city center (Mahendrapul) -- short hop
• Damside -- short hop
• Lakeside (tourist hub) -- about 4 km, the most common destination; also available as a pre-booked transfer at a fixed price
• Sarangkot -- about 12 km uphill on a winding road, the most expensive of these by some margin; an SUV is worth it

Two practical steps: ask your hotel what a fair fare looks like for your destination before you arrive, and agree the number with the driver before you set off. Prices climb in peak trekking season (October-November, March-April), when drivers know demand is high. If you want the price settled before you land, book a transfer.

Most flights to Pokhara land during daylight hours, as the airport has limited night operations. However, delays can push arrivals into early evening. After dark, fewer taxis wait outside the terminal. The roads between the airport and Lakeside are not well-lit in stretches. If you arrive after sunset, having a pre-arranged transfer is reassuring. Your hotel can often arrange a pickup if you contact them with your flight details.

Taxis in Pokhara are small. If you have more than two large bags, you may need two vehicles or need to arrange a larger car in advance. Child car seats are essentially nonexistent in local taxis. If traveling with young children, a pre-booked transfer service is the only reliable way to get an appropriate seat. Trekking gear bags and large backpacks can be strapped to the roof of some vehicles, but confirm this before setting off.

If you have booked a transfer, your driver will wait just outside the arrivals exit with a name sign. For taxis, simply walk out of the terminal and drivers will be there. There is a small parking area in front of the terminal. The whole airport is compact, so you will not have trouble finding your way. If you arranged a pickup through your hotel, look for their name or logo on a sign.

Negotiate a taxi if you are comfortable with bargaining, traveling light, and arriving during the day. It is the cheapest door-to-door option.

Book a private transfer if you want certainty on price, a newer vehicle, child seats, or you are arriving in the evening. Also good for groups heading to Sarangkot or other areas outside the center.

Ask your hotel to arrange pickup if you have already booked accommodation. Many Lakeside hotels offer airport pickups, sometimes free for longer stays.

Skip the local bus unless you are a budget backpacker with a small pack and time to spare.
