Arriving late at Abu Dhabi Airport: your night transport options

Abu Dhabi Airport is a major hub for Etihad Airways and handles many long-haul flights that arrive in the early hours. Landing at 1 AM, 3 AM, or even 4 AM is completely normal here.

What works after midnight

Taxis — 24/7, always available

Abu Dhabi's taxi service runs around the clock. The airport rank is staffed all night, and since many flights arrive late, there are usually plenty of taxis. Wait times are rarely more than 5-10 minutes, even at 3 AM.

The fare to downtown at night is the same as daytime — roughly 85-100 AED (about €20-24) on the meter. The airport taxi tariff genuinely doesn't change after dark: the flag fall stays at 20 AED and the per-km rate at 1.82 AED, day or night. (City Silver Taxis do tick up slightly at night, from 5 AED to 5.50 AED, but that isn't the tariff you're on.)

Uber & Careem — available but slower

Both apps work 24/7. Late night availability is generally fine — Abu Dhabi has enough drivers. Wait times might be 5-15 minutes instead of the usual 3-5. No surge pricing is common after midnight (unlike Dubai, Abu Dhabi late nights are usually quiet).

Bus — very limited

The A1 bus to downtown runs limited late-night services. Don't count on it after midnight. Even if one is running, waiting 30-40 minutes for a bus at 2 AM is not practical.

Pre-booked transfer — guaranteed

A transfer booked in advance means your driver is tracking your flight. If you're delayed 2 hours, they adjust. You walk out, find your name sign, and you're moving within minutes. It's the premium option, quoted when you book.

Abu Dhabi at night — what to expect

Abu Dhabi is one of the safest cities in the world, day or night. The airport area is well-lit, secure, and there's no safety concern about arriving late. However:

• Temperature: If arriving in summer, even at 2 AM it can be 35°C with high humidity. The terminal is air-conditioned but the taxi rank is outside.
• Roads: Late-night traffic is minimal. The 35 km ride to downtown takes about 20-25 minutes at night (vs 30-40 during the day).
• Hotels: Most Abu Dhabi hotels have 24-hour front desks. Late check-in is normal.

If you're connecting to Dubai at night

Many travelers arrive at AUH and need to get to Dubai. At night, this is a 75-90 minute drive on nearly empty highways. Options:

• Taxi: metered, and well north of 275 AED once tolls and traffic are in. The driver might not want to go — they have to return empty.
• Pre-booked transfer: quoted at booking. Guaranteed, fixed price, no negotiations.
• Waiting for the bus: First Abu Dhabi-Dubai bus is around 6 AM. Not worth waiting.

Our advice: If you're going to Dubai, always pre-book. Negotiating a Dubai trip with a taxi driver at 3 AM is not a good experience.

The Ramadan factor

During Ramadan, Abu Dhabi's nighttime schedule shifts. More people are out late (after iftar), which means more taxis available but also more demand around popular areas. Airport transport is largely unaffected.
