Venice's transport situation is unlike any other city. The comparison here covers both water-side and land-side options, since the right choice depends on where you are staying.
If your hotel is in Venice (island)
The only vehicle access into Venice island is by boat. Your meaningful options are:
Licensed water taxi (motoscafo): a private boat from the airport dock to the nearest canal dock to your hotel. It is priced per boat, not per person. Ask for the price before boarding, or take it from your booking. It can deliver you closer to your hotel than the public options, subject to dock access.
Alilaguna water bus: EUR 18 per person from the airport to Venice (EUR 10 to Murano), public boat service. You still walk from the Alilaguna stop to your hotel.
Pre-booked land transfer to Piazzale Roma: a minivan or sedan to the road terminus at Piazzale Roma, with a fixed price quoted at booking. From there you take the vaporetto or walk, so it is a two-leg journey. It makes sense for large groups with heavy luggage.
If your hotel is in Mestre (mainland)
This is a standard land transfer situation. A taxi from the airport goes to Mestre; confirm the fare with the driver. A pre-booked transfer has a fixed price quoted at booking. The ATVO express bus also serves Mestre. No boat required.
Pre-booked water transfer
Pre-booked water taxi services can be arranged in advance. Get the price quoted at booking and check what it includes. The advantages are a confirmed booking, a name-sign meeting if your booking includes it, and no dock-side negotiation.

The honest conclusion
For Venice island accommodation, the private water taxi or water transfer is the premium choice for groups sharing one boat: divide the quoted price by your party size and compare with EUR 18 per person on the Alilaguna. Solo travellers usually find a private boat hard to justify over the Alilaguna unless luggage, time, or comfort is a strong priority.
For Mestre accommodation, a land transfer is standard. The 'water taxi vs transfer' question does not apply.
Piazzale Roma land transfer: when it makes sense
For a large group with many pieces of luggage, a minivan land transfer to Piazzale Roma is practical: get the fixed price quoted at booking for your group size. Everyone and everything arrives at the road end of Venice together, then the group takes the vaporetto or porters carry bags to the hotel. This avoids the per-person Alilaguna fee and the cost of a private boat. The ATVO bus (EUR 12 single) is the budget version of the same route.
