Getting from Chennai Airport to Your Hotel

Chennai International Airport (MAA) is located in Tirusulam, about 18 km southwest of the city centre (T. Nagar / Egmore area). The ride takes 30 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic, which in Chennai can be severe. The pre-paid taxi counter in arrivals charges a fixed fare by destination — the rate card is posted at the counter, so check it there. Uber and Ola price dynamically. Pre-booked private transfer prices are set by each provider. The one fare we can state precisely is the metro: Chennai Metro's published chart puts the airport to Egmore or Chennai Central at 40 INR, with a network maximum of 50 INR. It connects to central stations but is not practical if you have heavy luggage.

Chennai has two terminals. Terminal 4 (formerly the international terminal) handles most international flights, while Terminal 1 handles domestic. A free shuttle bus connects the two, though the walk between them is also possible (about 10 minutes).

Immigration at Terminal 4 varies dramatically. At 2 AM when several Gulf flights land together, the queue can stretch to 45–60 minutes. During quieter times, you might clear in 15 minutes. Indian immigration has moved to electronic gates for some passport holders, which speeds things up.

Baggage claim is below the immigration hall. Trolleys are free. After collecting your bags, you pass through customs (green channel for nothing to declare) and enter the arrivals hall. There is a Starbucks, a few ATMs, SIM card counters (Airtel and Jio are the best options), and currency exchange booths.

Chennai is hot and humid for most of the year. Stepping outside the air-conditioned terminal feels like walking into a wall of warm, damp air — especially between April and June.

Pre-paid taxi: A government-run pre-paid taxi counter is located in the arrivals hall. You tell the attendant your destination, pay a fixed fare, and receive a slip. Take the slip to the taxi queue outside. The fares are fixed per destination and posted on the rate card at the counter — read it before you pay, since that card is the only authoritative source for the current rate. Vehicles are typically white Ambassador or Innova cars. This system avoids fare negotiation but the vehicles can be old and AC quality varies.

App-based cabs (Uber, Ola): Both operate at Chennai Airport. The pickup point is at a designated area outside arrivals (follow signs). Pricing is metered through the app, and is usually the cheapest motor vehicle option. Surge pricing applies during peak hours (11 PM–1 AM when international flights cluster, and morning rush hour). Wait times can be 5–15 minutes.

Pre-booked private transfer: A driver waits for you in the arrivals hall with a name board. Vehicles are newer sedans (Toyota Etios, Honda City) or SUVs (Innova Crysta). More expensive than app cabs but provides certainty, comfort, and flight tracking. Ideal for first-time visitors or business travellers.

Airport metro: The Chennai Metro Blue Line has a station at the airport (Chennai Airport station) connecting to stations across the city, including Egmore and Chennai Central. Trains run roughly every 8–12 minutes from 5:30 AM to 11 PM. Fares come straight off CMRL's published chart: 40 INR to Egmore, Chennai Central or Government Estate; 30 INR to Guindy, Saidapet or Teynampet; 20 INR to Alandur. Nothing on the network costs more than 50 INR, and a CMRL travel card takes 20% off. This is by far the cheapest way into the city — useful if you are travelling light, but not practical with large suitcases during rush hour.

Suburban train: Tirusulam railway station is adjacent to the airport. Suburban trains run to Chennai Beach, Park, and Egmore stations. Fares are a few rupees — cheaper than the metro — but the trains are very crowded and not suitable with luggage. Buy at the station counter.

Bus: TNSTC and MTC buses stop on the road outside the airport. Very inexpensive but impractical for arriving travellers with luggage.

Everything else — the pre-paid taxi counter sets fixed fares by destination and posts them on a rate card in arrivals; Uber and Ola price dynamically and surge hard between midnight and 2 AM; private transfers are priced by each provider. None of these publishes a rate we can quote you and have it still be true when you land, so: read the pre-paid card at the counter, check the app before you confirm, and get transfers quoted in writing. The same goes for longer runs to Mahabalipuram (about 55 km) and Pondicherry (about 150 km).

Tolls on the elevated highway may be charged on top of a transfer or taxi fare — ask whether they are included when you book, and expect the driver to add them if not.

Chennai Airport is busy around the clock. A significant number of international flights from the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe arrive between 11 PM and 4 AM. The airport is fully operational during these hours, including immigration, baggage handling, and the pre-paid taxi counter.

Uber and Ola are available at night but surge pricing is common during the midnight-to-2 AM rush, when Gulf flights land together and thousands of passengers request rides at once. Pre-paid taxis charge their posted rate regardless of the hour, which makes them a steadier late-night option. The metro does not run after 11 PM.

The upside of arriving late is traffic. Chennai's daytime traffic is notoriously bad — a ride that takes 30 minutes at midnight might take 75 minutes at 9 AM. Late-night arrivals get a faster, smoother drive into the city.

Chennai Airport is large and walkable, but the distances between immigration, baggage claim, and the exit can be tiring with small children. Trolleys are available and free.

Child car seats are not standard in Indian vehicles — not in taxis, not in Ubers, and not in most private transfers. This is a cultural norm across India. If you need a car seat, bring your own. Some premium transfer companies may be able to arrange one with advance notice, but verify before relying on it.

For families with multiple bags, an SUV (Innova Crysta) is the standard upgrade. It fits 6–7 passengers and has proper boot space. Request this specifically — a standard sedan in India has limited trunk space.

The drive through Chennai can be chaotic by Western standards. Lane discipline is loose, horns are constant, and traffic moves in patterns that take some getting used to. This is normal and not dangerous, but it can be unsettling for children (or adults) experiencing it for the first time.

For pre-booked transfers, your driver will be in the arrivals hall holding a board with your name. At Terminal 4 (international), the meeting area is just after you exit customs. The hall is large and can be crowded, so look carefully or walk slowly — drivers are used to scanning for their passengers.

For pre-paid taxis, follow signs to the counter inside arrivals, get your slip, then walk to the taxi queue outside.

For Uber and Ola, follow the signed pickup lane to the designated area outside the terminal. The apps will show you the exact pickup point.

If you cannot find your driver, Chennai Airport has decent cellular coverage and free Wi-Fi (slow but functional). Call your driver or transfer company directly.

Book a private transfer if: You are arriving for the first time, have a lot of luggage, are travelling with family, want guaranteed AC and comfort, or are heading somewhere outside the city like Mahabalipuram.

Use Uber or Ola if: You are comfortable with apps, want the cheapest comfortable ride, and do not mind a possible 5–15 minute wait. Check surge pricing before confirming.

Take a pre-paid taxi if: You want a fixed fare without app dependency, are arriving late at night, or just want to walk out and go.

Take the metro if: You are travelling light with just a backpack, heading to a station on the Blue Line, and arriving during operating hours (5:30 AM–11 PM).
