The Kefalonia taxi reality
Kefalonia has a very small number of licensed taxis for an island of its size. During summer, when charter flights bring hundreds of tourists simultaneously, the airport taxi stand might have 2-3 cars. Once those are gone, you're waiting — and calling a taxi on a Greek island isn't always easy.
This isn't like London or Barcelona where there's always another taxi around the corner. On Kefalonia, if you can't find a taxi, you're genuinely stuck.
When a taxi works
- Off-season (October-May) — fewer tourists, taxis are available
- Going to Argostoli only — short trip, likely to find a car
- Midday arrival — peak taxis are morning and evening flights
- You're comfortable waiting — might be 10-30 minutes for a taxi to return
When a transfer is essential
- Peak summer (July-August) — taxis are overwhelmed
- Late evening arrival — taxis may not be at the airport at all

But the peace of mind is enormous. Imagine landing on a Greek island at 10 PM with your family, collecting your bags, walking outside... and there are no taxis. Rental car as the alternative
Many visitors skip both taxis and transfers entirely by renting a car. This makes sense if:
- You're staying more than 2-3 days
- You want to explore beaches and villages
- Your accommodation is remote (villa in the hills)
- You value independence
