Taxi vs pre-booked transfer from Toronto Pearson Airport

Last updated: February 2026

Getting from Pearson to your destination by private vehicle means choosing between a taxi, rideshare, or pre-booked transfer. Here is how they compare for the Toronto context.

Taxis

Toronto taxis at Pearson operate on a flat-rate system to downtown zones, approximately $60-65 CAD. This is transparent and fair. Outside the flat-rate zone, meters apply. Vehicles are clean, drivers are licensed, and card payment is standard. You walk out, join the taxi queue, and get in the next available car. Wait times are usually under 10 minutes.

The limitation: you get whatever vehicle is next in line. No choice of car type, no car seats, no guaranteed minivan. For solo travelers or couples heading downtown, this works perfectly.

Uber and Lyft

Both operate at Pearson with dedicated pickup zones. Prices to downtown range from $40-70 CAD depending on traffic and demand. During off-peak times or late at night, rideshare is often cheaper than a taxi. During rush hour, surge pricing can make it more expensive.

The convenience of seeing the price estimate beforehand is valuable. But the price is only an estimate. Heavy traffic or a longer route can push the final fare higher.

Pre-booked transfers

You book in advance, specify your vehicle, and the price is fixed. A sedan to downtown runs $60-100 CAD. A minivan or SUV for groups costs more. The driver meets you at arrivals, often with a name sign, and handles luggage.

Transfers make the most financial sense for groups (splitting the cost), families needing car seats or larger vehicles, or business travelers who want a premium sedan and professional driver.

The traffic factor

This is where Toronto is unique among North American cities. The 401 and 427 highways between Pearson and downtown are notoriously congested. A 25-minute drive at midnight can become 75 minutes at 5 PM on a Friday.

This does not change the flat taxi rate. But for metered rides outside downtown, or for rideshare (which factors in time), heavy traffic increases your cost. A pre-booked transfer also has a fixed price regardless of traffic, which can be advantageous during rush hours.

When to choose what

Taxi for a straightforward downtown trip at the flat rate. Simple, fast to arrange, fair pricing.

Uber/Lyft when you want to see pricing upfront and the estimate is favorable. Best during off-peak hours.

Pre-booked transfer when you need a specific vehicle, travel with a group or family, want car seats, are heading to a suburb at an uncertain time, or need reliable service for a business arrival.

The cost picture

For a single person going downtown, the UP Express at $12.35 CAD makes all car options look expensive. If you must take a car, a taxi at $60-65 or an off-peak Uber at $40-50 are the best values. Transfers make sense when the situation demands more than a standard ride.
