Getting from Toronto Pearson Airport with kids and family

Last updated: February 2026

Pearson is a large airport but well-designed for families. Both terminals have elevators, family restrooms, and clear signage. The real challenge is ground transport, particularly around car seats and vehicle space.

Car seats in Ontario

Ontario law requires appropriate child restraint for children under 8 years old and under 80 pounds. This applies to all vehicles including taxis. However, taxis at the airport rank do not carry car seats. Uber and Lyft occasionally have car-seat-equipped vehicles but availability is not guaranteed.

Your practical options:

  • Bring a travel car seat. The most reliable approach. Install it in whatever vehicle you take.
  • Book a transfer with a car seat. Request the specific seat type when booking. Confirm it is included before your arrival.
  • Use the UP Express to Union Station and taxi from there. This avoids the highway portion without a car seat, though you still need ground transport from Union Station.

The UP Express with family

The UP Express is excellent value and avoids traffic entirely. For families, it works well if your luggage is manageable. The train has luggage storage areas but is not spacious during peak hours. With a double stroller, three suitcases, and two children, it becomes crowded.

If your hotel is near Union Station, the UP Express is ideal. If you need onward transport from Union Station, you are adding another vehicle to the trip, which may not simplify things.

Vehicle sizing

A standard taxi fits a family of four with moderate luggage. For anything more, you need a larger vehicle. Pearson does not have a dedicated minivan taxi queue. Rideshare apps sometimes offer XL vehicles, but availability is hit or miss.

Pre-booked transfers let you specify a minivan or SUV, ensuring adequate space. For families of five or more, or for groups with heavy luggage, booking the right vehicle in advance avoids the frustration of finding one at the curb.

Terminal navigation

Both terminals have family restrooms, elevators, and wheelchair-accessible paths that work equally well for strollers. The LINK Train between terminals is automated and accessible. The walk from baggage claim to ground transport is moderate but well-signed.

Practical tips for families

  • Car seat installation takes a few minutes, so factor that into your departure time from the pickup area
  • If checking a car seat as luggage, wrap it in a bag to protect it
  • The drive to downtown can take over an hour in traffic, so prepare entertainment for children
  • Snacks and water are available in the terminal after baggage claim
  • If booking a transfer, specify the exact number of car seats, booster seats, or infant seats needed
  • Winter arrivals: Toronto winters are cold, so have coats accessible, not buried in checked luggage
Pearson is manageable for families, but the car seat situation requires planning. Without advance arrangements, you are either bringing your own seat or hoping to find a suitable vehicle at the rank. Planning ahead eliminates that uncertainty.
