Varna is one of the most popular family beach destinations on the Black Sea, and the airport handles thousands of families every summer. The terminal is small and easy to navigate, which helps when you are managing tired children and a pile of suitcases.
Inside the Airport
After landing, you will clear passport control and collect bags in a single hall. There are toilets near the baggage claim area. The terminal has a small shop for drinks and snacks, but prices are typical airport markup. If you need to change a nappy or warm a bottle, the facilities are basic — do not expect a dedicated family room.
Free WiFi is available if you need to check your transfer booking or contact your hotel. It works but can be slow when the terminal is busy.
Child Seats and Vehicle Size
This is where planning matters. Bulgarian taxis do not carry child seats. If your child needs one (and by law, children under 150 cm should use appropriate restraints), a taxi from the rank is not going to work unless you bring your own seat.
Pre-booked transfers let you request child seats and booster seats when you book. You can also choose a larger vehicle — a minivan is often the right call for a family of four or five with holiday luggage, strollers, and beach gear. Standard sedans fill up fast when you add a car seat to the mix.
Getting to the Resorts
Most families heading through Varna Airport are going to one of the coastal resorts rather than the city itself. Here are the approximate travel times:
- Golden Sands: 25 minutes
- St. Constantine and Helena: 15 minutes
- Albena: 35 minutes
- Sunny Beach: 90 minutes
- Nessebar: 95 minutes
Late Arrivals with Children
Charter flights to Varna are notorious for delays, especially in peak summer. If you land after 23:00 with small children, you want a driver waiting — not a search for a taxi in the dark. Pre-booked transfers track your flight and adjust pickup time if you are delayed, so there is no stress about the driver leaving.
Practical Tips
- Book a minivan if you have more than two suitcases plus a stroller. Sedan boots fill up quickly.
- Request child seats at the time of booking, not on the day. Availability is not unlimited during peak season.
- Bring water and snacks from home for the drive. There is no convenient shop between the airport and most resorts.
- If your child is prone to car sickness, note that the road to Albena and Balchik has some winding sections.
