Arriving at Tirana Airport late at night

Last updated: February 2026

Tirana Airport receives evening flights from across Europe, with some arrivals stretching past 23:00. If your flight lands after dark, here is what you are working with.

The terminal at night

Immigration and baggage claim function normally regardless of the hour. The terminal is modern and well-lit. A few shops and the currency exchange may be closed, but ATMs remain operational. Free Wi-Fi is available around the clock.

The arrivals hall empties quickly after the last flights. It is not a place where you would want to spend the night. Seating is limited and there are no sleeping facilities.

Transport after the bus stops

The Rinas Express bus stops running in the early evening, typically around 19:00-20:00. This leaves two practical options for late arrivals.

Taxis are still available at the rank outside arrivals, though the number of cars decreases as the night goes on. Late-night fares tend to run 3,000-4,000 ALL ($30-40 USD) to the city center, which is higher than daytime rates. Drivers know you have few alternatives. Negotiate firmly but accept that prices will be above normal.

Pre-booked transfers are the most straightforward option for late arrivals. Your driver tracks your flight and waits regardless of delays. The price is agreed at booking, so there is no late-night surcharge surprise. You walk out, find your name sign, and you are on your way.

The road at night

The highway between the airport and Tirana is well-maintained and has streetlighting for most of its length. Traffic is minimal after midnight, so the drive is actually faster than during the day. Expect 15-20 minutes to the city center.

Common concerns

Safety: The airport area and the highway are safe at night. Tirana's crime rate is low, and the main risk is overpaying for transport, not personal safety.

Communication: If you do not have a local SIM, the airport Wi-Fi lets you message your hotel or transfer company. Download any needed apps before you fly.

Currency: ATMs inside the terminal work around the clock. Get some Lek before heading to the taxi rank so you can pay in local currency.

Practical tips

  • Confirm your transfer booking before departure, especially the flight number so the driver can track your arrival
  • Have your hotel address written down or saved on your phone
  • Carry cash in Lek for taxi fares since card payment is uncommon in Albanian taxis
  • If arriving very late and no taxis are available, the airport information desk may be able to call one for you
Late-night arrivals at Tirana are manageable but require a plan. Without the bus, you are relying on taxis or a pre-arranged ride. Having something confirmed before you land eliminates the one real problem: standing outside a quiet airport wondering how to get into town.
