Taxi vs pre-booked transfer from Tirana Airport

Last updated: February 2026

The distance from Tirana Airport to the city center is about 17 km. Both taxis and transfers cover it in 20-40 minutes. Here is how they compare in practice.

Taking a taxi

The taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals exit. Cars are marked and drivers are generally legitimate, though the experience can feel pushy. Multiple drivers may approach you at once, and the first price they offer is usually high.

The regulated fare to central Tirana is around 2,500 ALL ($25 USD), but many drivers quote 3,000-4,000 ALL or even ask for payment in euros at an unfavorable rate. Negotiation is the norm. If a driver is asking too much, walk to the next car.

Most taxis are cash only. Vehicles vary in quality from aging Mercedes sedans to newer cars. Air conditioning is not guaranteed in every vehicle, which matters in Albanian summers.

Pre-booked transfer

A transfer booked in advance gives you a fixed price, a known vehicle, and a driver waiting with your name. There is no negotiation, no uncertainty about the fare, and no need to carry exact cash.

Prices are typically $20-35 USD for a sedan, which is comparable to or sometimes less than what taxi drivers end up charging after negotiation. For a minivan or larger vehicle, expect $30-50 USD.

The driver monitors your flight, so delays do not cause problems. Meeting point is inside the arrivals hall or just outside, depending on the service.

What about ride-hailing apps

Some apps operate in Tirana, but airport coverage is unpredictable. You may get a ride quickly or wait 15-20 minutes with no drivers available. This is not the most reliable option right after landing, especially if you are tired and want to leave promptly.

Making the choice

A taxi makes sense if you are experienced with negotiating fares in the Balkans, carry cash in Lek, and want to leave immediately without pre-planning.

A transfer makes sense if you prefer a fixed price with no negotiation, arrive at night when taxi options thin out, travel with family or heavy luggage, or want the convenience of someone waiting specifically for you.

The price reality

The price difference between a taxi and a transfer is often smaller than expected. Taxis at Tirana Airport are not cheap because drivers operate in a low-competition environment. A pre-booked transfer at $25-30 is frequently the same or less than what you would pay a taxi driver after bargaining. The transfer just comes with more predictability and comfort.
