Gustaf III Airport does not handle night flights. The runway has no lighting system, and operations are restricted to daylight hours only. This is not a seasonal policy — it is a permanent limitation of the airfield's infrastructure. If you are searching for advice on arriving late at night in St. Barths, the short answer is: it does not happen.
Last flights of the day
The final arrivals at SBH are typically in the late afternoon, usually between 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM depending on the season and daylight hours. In winter months, when the sun sets earlier, the last flights may be slightly earlier. Airlines operating the SXM-SBH route (Winair, St Barth Commuter, Tradewind Aviation) publish their final departure times, and these are designed to ensure landing at SBH well before dusk.
What happens if your connection is delayed
This is the scenario that catches people off guard. If your long-haul flight into Sint Maarten (SXM) is delayed and you miss the last feeder flight to St. Barths, you will need to overnight in Sint Maarten. There is no alternative — no ferry service operates after dark either, and private boat charters at night are expensive and uncommon.
Hotels near Princess Juliana Airport in SXM are the practical fallback. If this risk concerns you, consider booking a connection with at least a three-hour buffer at SXM, or plan to overnight there intentionally and take a morning flight to SBH.
Evening transfers on the island
While flights do not arrive at night, you may still need a transfer in the evening — for example, from a restaurant back to your villa, or between locations on the island. Taxis operate into the evening but become scarce after about 10 PM. Having a restaurant or concierge call a taxi for you is more reliable than trying to hail one on the road.
If you expect to need late evening transport during your stay, renting a car is worth considering.
Planning advice
Build your travel day around the reality that SBH only works in daylight. Arrive at your connecting airport (usually SXM) with generous time. Book your SBH transfer for the confirmed flight time, and share your feeder flight number with the transfer provider — they will track it and adjust if the flight is early or late within the operating window.
St. Barths rewards planning. The island is small, the transfer is short, and once you are there, everything is close. Getting the timing right on the way in is the only part that requires attention.
