SBH - St. Barthelemy

Family and Kids: Getting from SBH Airport to Your Hotel

Arriving in St. Barths with children is manageable, but the journey has a few quirks that are worth preparing for. The flight into Gustaf III on a small propeller plane can be exciting for older kids and unsettling for younger ones — the approach over the hilltop is steep and the runway is very short. Once on the ground, the transfer itself is the easy part.

Child car seats

Island taxis in St. Barths do not carry child seats. If you need one for a toddler or infant, you have two options: bring your own (it counts toward your luggage weight on the feeder flight) or book a private transfer and request a seat in advance. Most transfer providers can supply one if given enough notice, but confirming this at the time of booking is essential — do not assume it will simply be available.

St. Barths roads are hilly with sharp turns. Even though distances are short, a proper child restraint is a sensible precaution.

Luggage weight limits

This is the biggest practical concern for families. The small aircraft that serve SBH typically allow 20-23 kg per passenger. A family of four might have 80 kg of checked luggage allowance, but car seats, strollers, and beach gear add up fast. Excess bags are usually sent on the next available flight — sometimes the same day, sometimes the next morning.

Pack essentials (medication, one change of clothes, phone chargers) in your carry-on so a delayed bag is an inconvenience rather than a crisis.

Vehicle size

A standard sedan taxi fits a family of four with moderate luggage. If you have a stroller, car seat, and more than two full-size suitcases, you will likely need a larger vehicle. Pre-booking lets you specify what you are traveling with so the right vehicle shows up.

The airport experience with kids

The terminal is small, open, and quick to move through. There is no long walk, no complicated signage, and luggage appears fast. Kids will not get bored waiting — you are typically outside within 10 minutes of the plane stopping.

There are no play areas or family facilities at the airport. If you need to change a baby or prepare a bottle, you will be doing so in basic conditions. The nearby St. Jean area has cafes and shops within a few minutes' drive if you need supplies shortly after arrival.

Recommended approach for families

Book a private transfer with a child seat request. Confirm the seat availability a day or two before travel. Have your accommodation address ready on paper or saved offline on your phone. Keep your transfer provider's phone number accessible. The ride will be short and easy — the preparation beforehand is what makes the difference.
