Pohnpei International Airport (PNI) is small, unhurried, and about 5 km from Kolonia, the main town. Most visitors are picked up by their hotel or a pre-arranged driver. There is no public bus service from the airport. A taxi or private transfer to Kolonia typically costs $10–$20 USD. The entire process from plane to vehicle rarely takes more than 20 minutes because immigration and baggage are handled in a single modest terminal.

You step off the plane onto the tarmac and walk into the terminal building. Immigration is straightforward but can move slowly when a United Airlines island-hopper flight arrives with a full load. Baggage claim is a single belt in a small hall. Once you collect your bags, you exit into a covered area where drivers and hotel representatives wait. There is no air conditioning in most of the terminal, so expect warmth and humidity immediately. The airport has no ATM on the landside, so have some US dollars ready — the Federated States of Micronesia uses USD as its currency.

Taxis are available outside the terminal but there is no formal taxi rank or meter system. You negotiate the fare before getting in. Vehicles vary widely in condition.

Pre-booked private transfer gives you a confirmed vehicle and driver waiting with your name. This removes any uncertainty, which matters on an island where options are limited and schedules are relaxed.

Rental cars are available from a couple of local agencies, but you typically need to arrange pickup in advance. Do not expect a counter inside the terminal.
