Pohnpei Airport Transfer Guide for Families and Kids

Arriving at Pohnpei International Airport with children is straightforward, but the limited infrastructure means a little planning goes a long way.

What the airport is like for families

PNI is a small, single-terminal airport. There are no play areas, no family lounges, and minimal seating in the arrivals area. Baggage claim is a single belt in a compact hall. The upside is that everything happens in one place and the distances are short — you will not be walking long corridors with tired kids and heavy bags.

There are no luggage trolleys available, so if you are managing strollers, car seats, and suitcases, you will be carrying everything by hand.

Getting through arrivals

Immigration can be slow when a full island-hopper flight arrives, but it is a patient, unhurried process. There is no air conditioning in much of the terminal, so dress children in light clothing and have water accessible. The humidity hits immediately.

Transport with children

Most taxis and local vehicles on Pohnpei do not have child seats or booster seats. If your child requires one, you need to bring your own. This is not unusual for Pacific island destinations, but it is worth knowing before you land.

A pre-booked transfer allows you to request a larger vehicle — a minivan or SUV — that has space for luggage, a stroller, and a car seat you bring along. Trying to fit a family of four with full luggage into a random taxi at the terminal can be stressful.

Hotel pickups for families

If your hotel offers airport pickup, take it. The driver will know your family size and can bring an appropriate vehicle. Many resorts and guesthouses on Pohnpei are accustomed to families and will accommodate luggage and children without fuss.

The drive to Kolonia

The 5 km ride to Kolonia is on paved roads and takes about 10–15 minutes. Children will be fine. If your accommodation is further out — toward Nan Madol or the southern coast — the roads become rougher and the drive longer (30–45 minutes). For these trips, a reliable vehicle with some suspension matters more.

Key tips for families

  • Bring your own car seat. None are available locally at the airport.
  • Have US dollars in cash. Card payment for transport is essentially nonexistent.
  • Book your transfer in advance so the vehicle size matches your family.
  • Pack snacks and water for the kids — there is no cafe or vending machine in the arrivals area.
  • The heat and humidity are immediate, so light clothing and hydration matter from the moment you step off the plane.
