Getting from Lanseria (HLA) Airport to Johannesburg and Sandton

Lanseria International Airport (HLA) is Johannesburg's secondary airport, located north of the city near Randburg/Fourways. It is not OR Tambo International (ORT/JNB), which is the main hub 30 km southeast of the city. Lanseria serves budget and regional carriers (FlySafair, LIFT, Airlink) on domestic and some African regional routes. To Sandton - where most international visitors stay - it is 30 km / 30-50 minutes by road. Uber and Bolt work well at HLA and quote you in the app before you book; a metered taxi rank and pre-booked private transfers are the alternatives. Critical note: there is NO Gautrain connection to Lanseria - the Gautrain runs from OR Tambo, not HLA. This is the single most misunderstood fact about HLA.

Lanseria is a small, modern terminal that handles a fraction of OR Tambo's volume. Arrivals processing is fast — typically 10-20 minutes from plane to outside for domestic flights. Walking distances are short. Basic facilities (ATMs, a few shops, car rental desks, a small food court) are available.

International note: HLA handles some regional African international flights (to Harare, Windhoek, Lusaka and similar). Full international long-haul flights use ORT (OR Tambo), not HLA. If you arrive internationally at HLA, immigration is usually quick (15-40 minutes) because volumes are low.

Safety context — being honest: Johannesburg has a serious crime reputation that is partly earned. Visitor-facing safety is manageable with sensible behavior. Inside Lanseria terminal you are safe. The risks begin on the roads and at transit interchanges. Practical precautions:

• Use Uber, Bolt, or a pre-booked transfer — not a random stranger offering a ride.
• Do not walk out of the airport carrying visible valuables or large sums of cash.
• Do not accept help with luggage from anyone who approaches you at the curb — politely decline.
• Traveling between HLA and Sandton you will pass some areas of higher crime; stay in your vehicle, keep doors locked, don't open windows to strangers at robots (traffic lights) at night.
• Carjacking is a real (though statistically low) risk — especially at night on routes into Johannesburg. Pre-booked professional transfer drivers know the safe routes and are trained for this.

Cash and cards: South African rand (ZAR) is the only practical currency. ATMs in the terminal work with international cards. Most drivers and transfer operators accept card payment; Uber / Bolt / Yango are cashless by default. Carry a small amount of cash for tips.

Uber / Bolt / Yango (ride-hail apps): The default option for most visitors. All three operate at Lanseria with regulated airport pickup zones, and all three quote your fare in the app before you confirm - which is the only number worth trusting, since it moves with demand. Bolt is usually slightly cheaper than Uber; Yango is newer and availability varies. Pros: cheap, transparent pricing, card payment, driver tracked. Cons: vehicle quality varies (budget models), surge in rush hour. Do not use unofficial 'meter taxis' who approach you in the terminal - use the apps.

Metered taxi: There is an official taxi rank outside arrivals. The airport's recognised operator is LIATA (the Lanseria International Airport Taxi Association), which runs standard taxis and chauffeur-driven cars from the airport. Lanseria does not publish a fare table, so agree the price or confirm the metered rate with the driver before you set off. Generally dearer than Uber or Bolt, but available on the spot without app setup - useful if you land without a South African SIM.

Pre-booked private transfer: Professional driver, fixed price, meets you at arrivals with a name sign. Sedans, SUVs/minivans and luxury vehicles are all available, at prices set by each operator and quoted when you book. Worth the premium for: families, business travelers, late-night arrivals, anyone wanting to minimize friction. Transfer drivers know the city, know the safe routes, and don't cancel last minute.

Rental car: Multiple rental desks inside the terminal (Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Budget, First Car Rental). Reasonable inventory. Self-drive in Johannesburg is doable but requires South African-style driving - aggressive, minibus taxis weaving, potholes in some suburbs. GPS essential. Do not drive at night in Johannesburg unless you know where you're going. If you're just going from airport to hotel and back, a transfer is easier than a rental car and parking.

Gautrain - IMPORTANT: The Gautrain does NOT serve Lanseria (HLA). Gautrain's airport station is at OR Tambo (ORT). Do not plan to 'take the train from Lanseria to Sandton' - it does not exist. If you want the Gautrain, either fly into ORT or Uber from HLA to a Gautrain station (e.g., Midrand or Park Station, but at that point you've already paid for most of the ride, so just finish the journey by Uber).

Airport shuttle: A few hotel shuttles exist for specific properties, arranged through the hotel. There are also scheduled shared shuttles between Lanseria and Sandton run by private operators - check their own sites for routes, times and fares. There is no municipal bus service to the city.

Public minibus taxi: Not for tourists. Minibus taxis are the township commuter network - cheap, chaotic, not designed for airport passengers with luggage, and not safe for visitors unfamiliar with the system.

Any range we published would be a guess that quietly went stale - and this page previously converted every rand figure at a hardcoded exchange rate, which made the dollar column wrong the moment the rand moved. All three options show you the real price before you commit: the app quotes you, the transfer quotes you at booking, and at the rank you can agree the fare before you get in. Use those numbers, not ours.

Key fact: Friday evening rush (4-7 PM) and Sunday evening can push Uber and Bolt fares up sharply through surge. Book a fixed-price transfer if surge would be a problem for your budget.

Metered taxi: Available for scheduled late arrivals; fewer at random hours. Confirm the fare before you set off.

Pre-booked transfer: The clear recommendation for any late arrival. Driver tracks the flight, waits for delays, knows the safe routes, and you skip the 'standing at the curb at midnight' moment. For family or first-time visitors, this is the one place not to cut the budget.

Safety note: If something goes wrong (flight delay, no driver), stay inside the terminal, use the airport's information desk, and arrange an Uber or call your hotel for help. Do not walk out of the airport at midnight to 'find a taxi' yourself.

HLA is family-friendly — small, efficient, low-chaos compared to ORT. The challenge is the 30-50 minute drive to most hotel districts with tired kids after a flight. Plan snacks and entertainment.

Car seats: South African law requires child restraints for children under 3, and good practice for older kids. Uber, Bolt, and metered taxis do not provide them. If you need a car seat:

• Bring your own (airlines allow this, sometimes free as checked baggage).
• Pre-book a transfer specifying child seats in advance. Most reputable Johannesburg transfer operators can provide infant and booster seats with notice.
• Uber Car Seat service is limited and not reliable at HLA.

Luggage: Sedans handle 3-4 medium bags. For families with 4+ people and full luggage, request a minivan or SUV transfer. Uber XL exists but vehicle type isn't guaranteed.

Strollers: Terminal is fully stroller-accessible. The onward journey is in a private vehicle for most visitors — no transit barriers.

Uber / Bolt / Yango: Regulated ride-hail pickup zone outside arrivals — the app directs you to the specific bay. Short walk from the terminal exit. Verify license plate and driver photo before getting in. If someone approaches you claiming to be your Uber but the plate doesn't match — walk away.

Metered taxi: Official taxi rank directly outside arrivals, clearly signed and attendant-managed. The next car in line takes you.

Pre-booked transfer: Driver waits inside arrivals holding a sign with your name. This is the lowest-friction option for first-time visitors and strongly recommended for evenings and nights.

Rental car: Rental agency desks are inside the terminal; after paperwork you walk out to the car rental lot a short distance away.

Do NOT use: Freelance drivers who approach you inside the terminal offering a ride. They are not licensed, not regulated, and are a known source of scams and safety issues.
