Providenciales is a small island, so distances are short and fares are modest. Everything is priced in US dollars, which simplifies things for American visitors.
How taxi pricing works
Taxis in Turks and Caicos use a government-regulated zone-based fare system. This means the fare is determined by your destination zone, not by a meter or negotiation. The rate typically covers one or two passengers, with an additional $5-8 per extra person.
This system is transparent once you know it, but drivers do not always volunteer the per-person breakdown. Ask before you get in if you want clarity.
Fares from PLS to popular areas
- Grace Bay (most resorts): $25-35
- Turtle Cove: $20-30
- Leeward: $30-40
- Long Bay Beach: $30-40
- Blue Hills: $15-25
- Sapodilla Bay / Chalk Sound: $25-35
- Downtown (central Provo): $10-20
Shared shuttle costs
Shared shuttles run between the airport and major hotel areas, primarily Grace Bay. Per-person fares are typically $15-20. The trade-off is time -- the shuttle makes multiple hotel stops, so your 10-minute direct ride becomes a 20-30 minute tour of Grace Bay drop-offs. Fine if you are not in a rush.
Private transfer pricing
Pre-booked private transfers cost more than taxis but offer fixed pricing, a dedicated vehicle, and meet-and-greet service:
- Grace Bay (sedan): $35-50
- Grace Bay (SUV/van): $50-70
- Leeward / Long Bay: $40-55
- Chalk Sound / Sapodilla Bay: $35-50
Rental car costs
If you plan to rent a car, daily rates at PLS run $50-90 depending on the vehicle and season. Factor in fuel (gasoline is more expensive on the island than in the US) and any added insurance. A rental makes financial sense only if you plan to use the car beyond the airport-to-hotel trip.
Tipping
Tipping 15-20% is standard in Turks and Caicos, including for taxi drivers and transfer drivers. Some private transfer services include gratuity in the price -- check when booking.
The bottom line
Getting to Grace Bay from the airport is a short, inexpensive trip no matter which option you choose. The difference between the cheapest (shared shuttle at $15-20 per person) and most comfortable (private SUV at $50-70 total) option is modest. For a couple, a taxi is the easiest choice. For families and groups, a private transfer often works out cheaper per person than individual taxi fares.
