Mauritius does not have a city center in the traditional sense. The airport is in the southeast, and visitors scatter to resort areas across the island. This means costs vary significantly depending on where you are staying.
Price ranges by destination
All prices are approximate and can vary based on time of day, vehicle type, and whether you have pre-booked.

Why the range is so wide
Taxi fares at MRU are nominally zone-based, but actual pricing involves negotiation. The price you pay depends on how many taxis are available, your negotiating confidence, and whether the driver takes the motorway or the scenic route. Pre-booked transfers have fixed prices, which is partly why they tend to land at the lower end of these ranges.
Hidden costs to be aware of
- Night surcharges: Some taxi drivers add a premium for pickups after 22:00, typically 10-20% above daytime rates.
- Luggage fees: Not standard, but occasionally attempted with oversized items.
- Waiting time: If you pre-book a transfer and your flight is significantly delayed, most services absorb the wait. Taxis may not.
- Currency exchange: If you pay a taxi in euros because you have not withdrawn rupees, the driver's exchange rate will not favor you. Use the airport ATMs.
The budget option
There is no practical budget transport from MRU airport. Public buses do not serve the terminal directly, and the distances involved make walking to a bus stop with luggage impractical. The cheapest realistic option is a pre-booked transfer to a nearby destination on the east coast.
What to budget
For most visitors heading to popular resort areas, budget EUR 30-60 for airport transport each way. Families needing a larger vehicle should budget toward the higher end. This is one of those costs that is simply part of visiting Mauritius, and trying to cut corners on it rarely saves enough to be worthwhile.
