Arriving at Mauritius airport late at night

Last updated: February 2026

Several long-haul flights from Europe, the Middle East, and South Africa land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport between 22:00 and 02:00. If your flight is one of them, here is what you need to know.

The airport after dark

The terminal stays operational for arriving flights, but it empties out quickly once passengers clear immigration and collect bags. The duty-free shops and most food outlets close by late evening. ATMs remain accessible, and there is limited seating in the arrivals hall. The terminal is safe but quiet, and there is not much reason to linger.

Immigration processing at night depends entirely on how many flights land close together. If yours is the only arrival, you could be through in 10 minutes. If two wide-body aircraft land within 30 minutes, expect a longer wait with fewer counters staffed.

Getting to your hotel at night

The biggest practical consideration is that your hotel is likely 45-90 minutes away. At night, roads are empty, which actually makes the drive faster. Grand Baie can be reached in under an hour when there is no traffic. However, the roads between the airport and the west or north coast are dark, winding in places, and not well lit outside the motorway section.

Pre-booked transfers are strongly recommended for late arrivals. The driver monitors your flight, adjusts for delays, and is waiting when you emerge. You avoid the stress of negotiating with taxi drivers when you are exhausted, and you have a confirmed price.

Taxis are available at the rank even late at night, but the number of waiting drivers drops significantly after midnight. If your flight is delayed and you arrive at 03:00, there may be very few taxis available. Prices can also creep up when demand exceeds supply at odd hours.

Hotel shuttles may not operate for late arrivals. Confirm with your resort well in advance if they offer overnight pickups.

Safety considerations

Mauritius is generally safe, and the airport area is secure. The main risk with late-night travel is fatigue-related. You are tired, the driver may be tired, and the roads are dark. A professional transfer driver who does this regularly is a reasonable safeguard. Avoid accepting rides from unofficial touts who approach you inside the terminal.

Practical tips for late arrivals

  • Withdraw cash from the ATM before exiting, as options will be limited at your destination until morning.
  • Have your hotel address and booking confirmation easily accessible on your phone.
  • If traveling with children, bring snacks and water for the car journey. Nothing will be open along the route.
  • Confirm your transfer or taxi booking the day before departure.
  • Keep your phone charged. A portable battery pack is genuinely useful.

Is it worth booking an airport hotel instead?

There is no hotel within the airport itself. The nearest accommodation is a 10-15 minute drive away. Unless your onward journey is extremely long or you are arriving after 02:00 with young children, most travelers find it simpler to push through to their final destination. The late-night drive is actually quite pleasant when the roads are clear.
