Taxi vs pre-booked transfer from O.R. Tambo Airport

Last updated: February 2026

The decision between grabbing a taxi at the rank, ordering a rideshare, or pre-booking a transfer comes down to three things: how much unpredictability you are comfortable with, what time you arrive, and how much luggage you are carrying.

Metered taxis from the rank

The official taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals hall. These are regulated and metered. Drivers are generally professional, though the experience varies. The main advantage is immediacy. You walk out and get in a car. The downside is that fares depend on traffic, the meter runs the entire time you are stuck on the highway, and during peak hours your ZAR 400 trip to Sandton can become ZAR 600 or more. You also cannot choose your vehicle size, which matters if you have significant luggage.

Uber and Bolt

Both apps work well in Johannesburg. Pricing is usually lower than metered taxis during normal hours, but surge pricing during peak times or late at night can push fares above taxi rates. The pickup location is not at the terminal door, it is in the parking structure, which means a 5-10 minute walk with your bags. You get fare estimates in advance and a GPS-tracked ride, which adds a layer of accountability.

Pre-booked private transfer

You arrange and pay before your flight. A driver meets you in arrivals with your name, helps with luggage, and drives you directly to your destination. The price is fixed regardless of traffic. The vehicle is confirmed in advance, so if you need a minivan for a family or extra luggage space, that is sorted before you land. The trade-off is that it typically costs more than a standard Uber fare, though less than a metered taxi stuck in rush hour traffic.

Direct comparison

| Factor | Metered taxi | Uber/Bolt | Pre-booked transfer | |--------|-------------|-----------|--------------------| | Price certainty | Low | Medium | High | | Availability at night | Good | Variable | Guaranteed | | Vehicle choice | None | Limited | Full | | Luggage handling | Basic | Basic | Included | | Wait time | Low | 5-15 min | None | | Meet in arrivals | No | No | Yes |

When each option makes sense

A metered taxi is fine if you are a solo traveler, arriving during the day, heading to a central destination, and want to walk out and go. Uber or Bolt works well if you are price-conscious, familiar with the apps, and do not mind the parking structure pickup. A pre-booked transfer makes the most sense for families, late-night arrivals, large groups, or anyone who values knowing exactly what they are getting before they land.

One thing to avoid

Do not accept rides from people approaching you inside the terminal. These are unlicensed operators. Some are harmless but overpriced, others are not safe. Stick to the official taxi rank, an app-based ride, or a pre-arranged transfer.
