A significant number of long-haul flights from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia land at O.R. Tambo between 20:00 and 01:00. If your flight is one of them, you need to know that your transport options shrink considerably after dark.
What is open and what is not
The terminal itself stays operational around the clock. Immigration, baggage reclaim, and the arrivals hall function normally regardless of the hour. A few food outlets and shops may be closed, but ATMs and currency exchange are generally available. The Gautrain, however, stops running around 20:30 on weekdays and even earlier on weekends. This is the single biggest limitation for late arrivals.
Your realistic options
Metered taxis still operate from the official rank outside arrivals. The queue is shorter at night, so you will usually get a car quickly. Ensure the meter is switched on and agree on the route before departing. Fares do not officially increase at night, but there are fewer drivers available.
Uber and Bolt work after dark. Wait times increase compared to daytime, typically 5-15 minutes rather than 2-5. Surge pricing often applies between 22:00 and 02:00, especially when multiple flights land close together. Pickup remains from the e-hailing zone in the parking structure.
Pre-booked private transfers are the most predictable late-night option. Your driver tracks your flight and adjusts for delays. There is no surge pricing and no wondering whether a car will be available. You walk out of arrivals and someone is holding your name.
Safety considerations
Johannesburg requires more caution after dark than most cities. The airport perimeter roads and surrounding areas are not safe for walking, and hijackings do occur on roads leading from the airport, particularly the R24 and certain off-ramps. Using a known, tracked transport service, whether that is a registered taxi, a rideshare app, or a pre-booked transfer, is not optional. Do not accept rides from anyone approaching you in the terminal.
If your flight is severely delayed
If you land after midnight and have no transport arranged, the arrivals hall is a safe place to wait. There are seats, functioning toilets, and security presence. Uber and Bolt should still be available, though with longer waits. If you have a pre-booked transfer, the driver will typically wait or adjust based on live flight tracking. Confirm this policy when booking.
Practical tip
Have your accommodation address saved on your phone, not just in email. Cell signal can be patchy in the terminal, and if you cannot load the address, it slows everything down. A screenshot works when your data does not.
