The late-night taxi math
Taxi meters in Seoul carry a stepped late-night surcharge, and it is not the flat 20% after midnight that many guides quote. Under the Seoul Metropolitan Government tariff for Seoul regular taxis it is 20% from 22:00 to 23:00, 40% from 23:00 to 02:00, and 20% again from 02:00 to 04:00. A further 20% applies to journeys outside the city limits, and the surcharges can stack to a maximum of 60%. So a ride in the 23:00-02:00 window carries the highest surcharge. Deluxe, jumbo and International Taxi, or taxis licensed outside Seoul, may be charged differently, so confirm with the driver.
The night bus option
The airport's own page lists the night routes and fares: N6000 to the Gangnam Express Bus Terminal at KRW 17,000 for adults, and N6002 (Cheongnyangni) and N6701 (Dongdaemun Design Plaza) at KRW 18,000. N6701 reaches Seoul Station about 60 minutes after leaving Terminal 1, and N6000 reaches the Gangnam Express Bus Terminal in about 70 minutes. Tickets are bought at the ticket booths or automated ticket machines. Check the current timetable on the airport website, since night routes and fares change. Buses make several stops, so they are slower than a taxi and not ideal with heavy luggage.
Why pre-booking works at night
The price of a pre-booked transfer is fixed and quoted at booking, so the taxi meter's 40% surcharge window does not apply to it. If meet-and-greet is included in your booking, you find your name sign and leave; confirm the meeting point in your booking.
If you wait for the first train
If your Seoul hotel check-in is not until morning, many travelers wait for the first AREX Express from Terminal 1, which leaves at 5:24 AM, rather than pay a late-night taxi fare.
