When the app cab wins
For most travelers, Uber or Ola is the best default choice. The pricing is the lowest, you see the exact fare before confirming, payment is handled through the app, and you get the driver's details and GPS tracking. This works especially well if you already have these apps set up with an international payment method.
Uber Go and Ola Mini give you air-conditioned sedans at prices that are hard to argue with by international standards - and you see the exact fare in the app before you confirm, which is the number that matters.
When the pre-paid taxi wins
If you do not have Uber or Ola installed, do not have an Indian phone number, or simply prefer a counter-based transaction, the pre-paid taxi is straightforward. You pay a fixed rate, receive a receipt, and are matched with a car. No app, no negotiation, no surprises.
Pre-paid taxis also avoid surge pricing. During late-night hours when app cabs charge 1.5-2x, the pre-paid counter rate stays the same.
When the private transfer wins
First-time visitors to India often appreciate the private transfer experience. Your driver meets you inside arrivals with a name sign, helps with luggage, and drives you directly to your destination in a clean, well-maintained vehicle. There is no navigating the chaotic arrivals curb, no showing your phone to a driver, and no uncertainty.
Families benefit from the ability to request child seats, which neither taxis nor app cabs provide.
Late-night arrivals get a driver who has tracked the flight and is waiting regardless of delays. No surge pricing, no waiting for an available car.
The honest verdict
Uber and Ola offer the best value for experienced travelers comfortable with Indian travel. Pre-paid taxis are a solid fallback. Private transfers are worth the premium for first-time visitors, families, and late-night arrivals. At Hyderabad's prices, even the premium option is extremely affordable by international standards.
